Cornell Athletics Recap from Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Louis Dale became the 23rd player in Cornell history to record 1,000 career points to highlight the Big Red's 85-45 victory at Brown on Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Big Red bounced back from last night's loss to Yale and improved to 18-8 (8-2 Ivy), while the Bears fell to 7-17 (1-9 Ivy).

Five Cornell players scored in double figures led by 16 points and nine rebounds from Jeff Foote, while Ryan Wittman posted 15 points and four assists. Dale scored 12 points amd added three assists and zero turnovers in 20 minutes, while both Alex Tyler and Brian Kreefer pitched in with 10 points apiece. The duo also combined for 13 rebounds as the Big Red outrebounded the Bears 48-29. As a team, Cornell shot 53 percent from the floor and limited Brown to 32 percent shooting, including a miserable 3-of-21 day from beyond the arc. The Big Red stole 13 a season-best passes, with Adam Wire grabbing three.

Peter Sullivan had 12 points, while Matt Mullery notched 11, including 10 in the first half. Chris Skrelja had six points, six assists and five rebounds in the loss. The home team was on the short end of the scoring in points in the paint (40-24), points off turnovers (20-3), fastbreak points (10-0), second chance points (15-3) and bench points (28-16).

The Big Red came out smoking in the first half and picked the Bears apart on offense, hitting 52 percent of its shots and 46 percent from beyond the arc while holding commanding leads on the backboards (21-12) while assisting on 11 baskets with just five turnovers. Wittman scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes and connected on all three of his 3-point attempts, while Dale had eight and both Tyler and Kreefer pitched in six. Dale became the 23rd player in school history to reach the 1,000 point mark for his career with a layup with 1:57 left in the first half. Kreefer added a game-high five rebounds, while Chris Wroblewski dished off five assists without committing a turnover.

Brown's first half offense consisted of Matt Mullery, who hit 5-of-6 field goals for 10 points in 19 minutes.

The game was never in doubt in the second half, as the Big Red's 17-point halftime lead quickly grew to 30 just five minutes in as the Big Red exploded to a 15-2 run behind three dunks from Foote. Head coach Steve Donahue was able to empty his bench with eight minutes left, and the game was punctuated by senior Conor Mullen's steal and dunk on a fastbreak to cap the scoring. In all, the Big Red outscored Brown 41-18 after the break to collect the win.

Cornell returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. when it visits Dartmouth at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H.
