News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...

  • Not including the six freshmen expected to join the roster next season, Cornell Athletics has posted the Big Red's 2011-2012 roster online.
  • Jeff Foote ('10) recently completed his rookie season with Melilla of the Spanish second division. The former Big Red center averaged a solid 7.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game during his first pro year while he was on loan to Melilla from Euro powerhouse, Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv club. Maccabi, which reportedly has a 3-year deal with Foote, signed over the weekend, Shawn James, a 2010-2011 All Israeli Super League selection who spent this past season with Bnei Hasharon. James, a 6'10" center, played collegiately at Duquesne and it is unclear what the implications are of his signing as they relate to Foote.
  • Throughout the year we provide periodic updates on Cornell's eight (8) overseas alumni playing professionally. Below, some updates:
-John McCord ('97) (SIG Strasbourg, Pro A France)-2010-2011 season concluded. The 6'6" forward and long time veteran of the European leagues averaged 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Strasbourg finished 12-18 and in 12th place in the 16 team league. During his roughly fifteen year pro career, McCord, a former 1st Team All Ivy League selection, has played in France's pro leagues, Venezuela and in the United Kingdom.

-Jeff Aubry ('99) (Halcones Rojos, LNBP Mexico/Arecibo Capitanes, Puerto Rico Basketball League)-Through May 31, the 6'11" Aubry is averaging 5.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game for Arecibo (11-10, 6th place out of 10 teams). Aubry splits his time in both the Mexican and Puerto Rican professional leagues. He played several seasons in the NBA D League in the early part of his career with the Fayetteville Patriots and Florida Flame. During his more than a decade of pro experience, Aubry has also played professionally in the ABA and abroad in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Poland, Argentina, Uruguay and Peru.

-Cody Toppert ('05) (Forli, LegaDue Italy)-2010-2011 season concluded. Toppert, a 6'4" shooting guard was averaging 9.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for Forli before the franchise terminated his contract during March. Toppert previously also played this season with the Plymouth Raiders of the British Basketball League where he was averaging 14.2 points per game before moving to Italy. Like Aubry, Toppert is a veteran of the NBA D League, a former Albuquerque Thunderbird. During his pro career, Toppert has also played in the CBA as well as in Germany, Portugal, and New Zealand.

-Jason Hartford ('08) (Ginasio, LPD Portugal)-2010-2011 season concluded. The 6'9" Hartford concluded his season averaging 14.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Ginasio finished the year 10-12 and in 6th place in the 12 team league and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. During his career, Hartford has played professionally in Finland and Africa (Mozambique).

-Louis Dale ('10) (Gottingen, Bundesliga Germany)-2010-2011 season concluded. Dale completed the regular season averaging 8.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Goettingen ended up 17-15 on the season and in 7th place out of 18 teams in the Bundesliga.

-Ryan Wittman ('10) (Ft. Wayne Mad Ants, NBA D-League)-2010-2011 season concluded. With the season finished, Wittman averaged 7.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game for the Mad Ants of the NBA D-League. Ft. Wayne finished 24-26 on the season and in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. Before moving to the D-League during January, Wittman averaged 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game for Forli in Italy's LegaDue this season.

-Jeff Foote ('10) (Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel Winner's League/Melilla, Spanish 2nd Division)- 2010-2011 season concluded. Foote averaged 7.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the floor. Melilla did not qualify for the playoffs finishing with a 14-20 record and 11th place finish in the 18 team league. Foote is on loan to Melilla from Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv.

-Jon Jaques ('10) (Ashkelon, Israel Winner's League)-2010-2011 season concluded. Jaques finished his season averaging 3.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Ashkelon was 6-21 and ended in 10th place in the 10 team Israeli league.

Paul Hewitt wastes no time filling the open scholarship left by Luke Hancock

It certainly didn't take long for new head coach Paul Hewitt to fill the open spot on the roster left by Luke Hancock's departure to Louisville.  By now you have probably seen the news that Seton Hall forward Anali Okoloji will be transferring to George Mason.  The 6'8" forward didn't play much in his freshman season at Seton Hall but was a highly coveted recruit back coming out. You will notice he was listed as a shooting guard on the recruiting sites and has been described as a 'wing forward' who can rebound and score inside and out. Although he couldn't get on the floor at Seton Hall the hope is a change in scenery and a new coaching staff will help bring out his potential.

Okoloji will sit out the 2011-2012 season by NCAA transfer rules and then join the class of Erik Copes, Corey Edwards, and Vaughn Gray in 2012-2013.

News and Notes: Friday Edition

Above, the Cornell Athletics logo from the 80s and the early 90s. Below, some news and notes for Friday...
  • The Boston Globe examines Steve Donahue's first recruiting class at Boston College and writes:

"Steve Donahue remembers the bad old days, when he was trying to establish himself as a head coach at Cornell. He had a team with little talent that produced few wins and drew few fans. Some gatherings at Cornell’s Newman Arena could be measured by the dozens.

He also remembers his recruiting mantra back then: Bring in good people, and good players will follow — eventually.

And they did, so much so that when Donahue left Ithaca, N.Y., last spring for Boston College, he had turned the Big Red into an Ivy League power with three consecutive conference titles.

'We got really good kids, and they helped us recruit kids that were better basketball players,’' said Donahue. 'And that’s the way we are doing it here.'

Donahue’s BC team is coming off a 21-13 season that ended with a second-round NIT loss to Northwestern. Donahue basically coached a team assembled by former coach Al Skinner, including All-ACC guard Reggie Jackson.

Jackson is gone, having opted to skip his senior season and enter next month’s NBA draft. So is the core group of seniors and other Skinner recruits, leaving BC in a rebuilding mode with lots of scholarships to give and some major reconstruction work for Donahue and his staff.

'It’s fun and it’s challenging,' said Donahue, who is recruiting at the top level for the first time after nearly 20 years in the Ivy League (at Penn as an assistant and at Cornell as a head coach). 'The fortunate thing is that we are at BC and we can get quality kids.' ... 'At Cornell, we had some long, lean years and you questioned yourself and asked, ‘When it is ever going to turn?’' said Donahue. 'But we got good kids and better players, and it did. And that’s why we do what we do.'"

  • Cornell assistant coach Mike Blaine tweeted his congratulations to Cornell's three departing seniors. The seniors, Aaron Osgood, Adam Wire and Mark Coury were members of the Big Red's three consecutive outright Ivy League championship teams between 2008 through 2010.

Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...

  • Mid Major Madness previews St. Bonaventure, an expected 2011-2012 Cornell road game opponent.
  • Cody Toppert ('05) has launched a new blog highlighting his basketball resume complete with photos and videos of his collegiate and professional career. Toppert played during the 2010-2011 season with the Plymouth Raiders of the British Basketball League before moving to Italy and signing with Fulgor Libertas Forli of Italy's LegaDue (2nd Division). Toppert was cut from the the Marco Polo Shop sponsored Forli club before the close of the season. This Is Plymouth, a British newspaper writes, "Guard Cody Toppert, 28, left [the] Raiders at Christmas for a shot at the big-time and a pay day at Forli in Italy's second division. Toppert bade farewell to the Pavilions in sensation[al] style, scoring a game-high 41 points in Raiders' 116-106 win over Guildford Heat on December 29. However, after making seven appearances, Forli axed him and he was suddenly without a club. [Plymouth head coach Gavin Love told This is Plymouth], 'Money's not everything. It's about being happy.' ...Love, who graciously allowed Toppert to be released from his contract to try out in Italy, added, 'When players like Cody get other opportunities, I would never stand in their way, because I want players who want to be here.'"
  • WHRB Sports analyzes our suggestion of an Ivy League-Patriot League Challenge.
  • BC Soaring reviews the 2010-2011 season of Boston College. The site writes, "The 2010-2011 season began with a new coach at the helm: Steve Donahue. Hired from the Cornell Big Red, our new coach came into the program and began his overhaul. Out was the tight flex offense run by Al Skinner, and in was a motion offense that is incumbent upon hot shooting and lots of attempts from beyond the arc. We knew, from previous experience, that the roster we had assembled simply wasn’t very good at it."
  • Below, a Date in Cornell Basketball History:
In what was essentially an Ivy League-Big Ten Challenge, between December 28-29, 1949, Cornell and Harvard met Ohio State and Michigan State in the first ever Spartan Classic hosted by Michigan State. The Big Ten foes went 3-1 against their Ivy opponents with Cornell losing to Ohio State in the first game, 43-42, followed by a 61-54 Big Red loss to the hosts the very next evening. Harvard knocked off Michigan State 68-57 in their first game but fell to Ohio State 59-48 on the second day. The Buckeyes would go on to finish ranked second in the nation in the final AP poll. Cornell finished the '48-'49 season with a disappointing 11-15 record, but would bounce back the following year with an 18-7 finish. Above, the A.P. recaps the first ever Spartan Classic.

News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Above, the cover of a November 19, 2005 game program from Cornell's visit to Penn State. Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...
  • According to EuroBasket.com, during the 2010-2011 season, Cornell's 8 alumni playing professionally is the most by any Ivy League team. The Big Red have alumni playing professionally in the NBA D-League, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Israel, and Puerto Rico.
  • The Chicago Basketball Blog advocates a MAC-Horizon League Challenge. ESPN's Eamonn Brennan comments, "In many ways... it's a natural fit. Not only do the two conferences already meet frequently, but the Horizon and MAC are evenly matched from top to bottom in most seasons, including last year." For similar reasons, it would seem to make sense that the Ivy League and Patriot League do the same.
  • The Newark Valley Basketball Club references Cornell's Elite Basketball Prospect Camp which is being held for potential recruiting targets between June 25-26, 2011.
  • While we frequently see numerous references in the social media to Cornell's 2010 Sweet Sixteen Run in the NCAA Tournament, we still think the Big Red's best performance of the 2009-2010 season was the 71-66 defeat at No. 1 Kansas on January 6, 2010 during which Cornell led 64-63 with just 49 seconds remaining. Kansas ultimately survived and advanced their home court winning streak to an incredible 51 straight games.

  • And speaking of dates in Cornell Basketball history...
Each spring and summer when Ivy League teams reveal their respective nonconference schedules, fans often debate which team has the most challenging slate. Cornell's 1992-1993 nonconference opponents have stood the test of time as one of the toughest schedules in the last 20 years among the Ivies. Five of Cornell's first eight non-league opponents were BCS teams, four of them ranked in the Top 25, two of them in the Top 10. During these first eight games, the Big Red fell on December 1 at No. 17 Syracuse (65-97), on December 21 at Pittsburgh (72-80) and on December 29 at No. 7 Seton Hall (75-59) before Cornell shocked No. 19 Cal, 74-54 in the Meadowlands on December 30. Cornell would wrap-up the first 8-game stretch of the '92-'93 season with a 98-60 defeat at No. 6 North Carolina. Above, the Associated Press recaps Cornell's shocking win over Jason Kidd's No. 19 ranked Cal team (Kidd was injured and did not play) while below, the A.P. recaps Cornell's struggle the following week at North Carolina.

Luke Hancock will transfer to Louisville

Well most fans saw this coming and now it is official that Luke Hancock will transfer to Louisville.  Hancock anchored the starting lineup last season and was a vital part of the team's success. Now that they are down two starters instead of just one you have to wonder if this is still a Top 30 team entering into the 2011-2012 season. With this latest departure next year's squad currently doesn't have a player who averaged more than 1.7 assists a game. Paul Hewitt will need a point guard to step up because the flow on offense for this team will be very different than what we saw last year.

Sherrod Wright's return helps fill the scoring void left by Hancock's departure but he doesn't handle the ball as well. Vertrail Vaughns could end up seeing the most increase in minutes as a result of this transfer and could find himself handling the ball a lot. Hewitt might lean on the front court players more as they are going to be the team's strength heading into next season.  The addition of Erik Copes helps give them depth in there and might provide better opportunities and second chances for the guards.

This latest news just adds to the number of question marks heading into next season.  The new coaching staff still has a lot of talent to work with but the expectations of a CAA title in their first season might be a little less in reach.

News and Notes: Saturday Edition

The announcement of Cornell's schedule is always an exciting event. Above, a 1903 New York Times clipping reveals the Big Red's opponents for the season. Below, some news and notes for Saturday.

  • The Arizona Republic writes, "Arizona's high-school sports season officially came to a close on Monday in Surprise with an awards banquet that feted some of the best and brightest student-athletes, officials and athletic programs in the state... One of those student-athletes receiving a plaque was Surprise Willow Canyon basketball player Deion Giddens. Giddens was a finalist for the Class 4A-5A Scholar Athlete Award. The tall basketball player is headed to Cornell University next year and will graduate with a 4.12 GPA. 'I thought it was a great accomplishment,' Giddens said of being a finalist. 'I couldn't have done it without my coaches and Mr. (Arthur) Greenway (Willow Canyon's athletic director). I thought it was a fun event.'"
  • Bruce Schoenfeld (Sports Illustrated) writes a piece on the life of a college basketball assistant coach on the recruiting trail. The article will give fans some insight into the recruiting life of Cornell's head coach, Bill Courtney and the assistants, Marlon Sears, Mike Blaine and Ricky Yahn.

Recruiting News

Below, some recruiting updates from around the Ivy League.

For a list of committed players to attend Ivy League schools, including profiles of incoming Cornell recruits, and a listing of Cornell's prospective recruiting targets, click here. For a list of general Ivy League prospective recruiting targets, click here. Please note that we update these lists daily.

In our last recruiting post, we noted that Darius Stevens (La Lumiere Prep) LaPorte, IN, 6-6, F, had committed to Columbia University. As an example of how arbitrary and untrustworthy recruiting ratings services can be, check out the screen capture image below of the ratings assigned to Stevens by ESPN's ScoutsInc. rating service. On May 6, ESPN rated Stevens with an 89 overall rating and ranked him as the No. 42 small forward in the United States. One week later, after Stevens decided to attend an Ivy League school, ESPN arbitrarily and without explanation of any kind, dropped Stevens' rating to an 80 and ranked him 97th in his position. Presumably, ESPN did not want to assign a high ranking to a player attending Columbia.

This was not an isolated incident either. In fact, this practice is rampant at ESPN. For example, incoming Cornell recruit, Shonn Miller, had his overall rating dropped from an 82 to a 79 just hours after he committed to Cornell. Meanwhile other big national services such as Rivals.com and Scout.com have also engaged in this practice quite regularly for years. Accordingly, we continually advise our readers to place very little weight on these types of ratings services when evaluating recruits. Instead, other talent indicators such as the number and quality of scholarship offers received are far more reliable indicators of an incoming recruit's ability/potential level. Of course, one must also consider the surrounding circumstances such as the recruit's level of exposure (i.e. does does he play on an elite high school or AAU team or have the opportunity to attend high exposure summer camps).

But of course, when evaluating a recruit, nothing is better than trusting one's own gut after personal observation. Evaluating a recruit is an art, not a science.

Although Chris Wroblewski, Errick Peck and Adam Wire played vital roles in Cornell's 2010 No. 17 national ranking, Sweet 16 appearance and third consecutive Ivy League title, none of the three players were evaluated by ESPN's scouting service as high school seniors. Each was assigned the lowly 40 rating.

***

As we have indicated on numerous occasions since March, the Ivies have been extremely active in the transfer marketplace and Columbia became the first Ivy League school to strike and score a transfer commitment in this recruiting cycle. George Washington University forward, Chris Fitzgerald (Northfield Mount Hermon School) Northfield, MA, 6-8, F, has decided to continue his career with the Lions. Fitzgerald becomes eligible the 2012-2013 season and will have three years available.

Fitzgerald was intent on attending Cornell as a high school senior and was recruited heavily by Steve Donahue's staff. However, like many talented prospects, he could not surpass Cornell's rigorous admissions hurdles and found an opportunity in the A-10 as an alternative. He was not recruited by the current Cornell staff. Fitzgerald is an outstanding face-up forward who can score reliably from outside the arc.

Cornell is also active in the transfer market and reportedly has engaged in conversations predominantly with players who can play on the interior.

Class of 2011 Recruiting News

Ryan Burton (North Lawrence HS) Bedford, IN, 6-8, F, committed to Divison II Bellarmine University over interest from Princeton and Penn according to the Louisville Courier Journal's Jody Demling.

NorCalPreps.com reports that Travis Souza (Northfield Mt. Hermon School) Northfield, MA, 6-5, G, will attend Cal-Irvine as a walk-on. Souza, a postgraduate, was evaluated very carefully during the spring of 2010, when he attended Turlock High School in the San Francisco Bay Area, by Cornell's former coaching staff.

Ryerson University of Canada announced the signing of Aaron Best (Eastern Commerce Collegiate) Toronto, Ontario, 6-5, G. Best was reportedly offered by Penn.

Class of 2012 Recruiting News

ScoutHoops.com reports that Delante Dunklin (Francis Parker HS) San Diego, CA, 6-0, G is talking to Cal Poly, Boise State, San Diego, Yale, Harvard, Penn, Fairfield and UC Santa Barbara. Dunklin said Cal Poly, San Diego and UCSB have each offered scholarships. Dunklin said he has a 3.0 GPA and is open to attending college in any geographic region.

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that Anthony Dallier (North Allegheny HS) Wexford, PA, 6-6, G, has a scholarship offer from Duquesne already on the table and was reportedly offered a roster spot by Cornell. Others such as Davidson, James Madison, William & Mary, Penn State, Michigan and Bucknell are heavily involved.

Jordan Barham (University HS) Shaker Heights, OH, 6-4, G is hearing from most of the Ivy League, as well as Penn State, Ohio University, Miami (OH), Rider, St. Joseph's, and Cleveland St. He is expected to visit Cornell during May per Indiana Basketball Source.

Zach Rufer (Burke Catholic) Goshen, NY, 6-2, G, told HudsonValley.com that he is being recruited by Davidson, Lafayette, Cornell, Army and Central Connecticut State. He said he plans on visiting, at least, Davidson, Cornell and Lafayette this summer.

News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

  • Cornell alumnus, John McCord ('97) has announced his retirement from basketball after a brilliant 14-year pro career in Europe. McCord averaged 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during 2010-2011 for SIG Strasbourg (12-18, 12th place) in the French Pro A League, France's top league. During his pro career, McCord, a 1996-1997 First Team All Ivy League selection, has played professionally in Venezuela (club: Marinos de Oriente), the United Kingdom (clubs: Chester Jets, Thames Valley Tigers, Edinburgh Rocks) and in France (clubs: Antibes (French Pro B), Limoges (French Pro B) and Strasbourg (French Pro A)). Over the years, McCord accumulated numerous honors and awards in Europe ncluding the 1998 MVP award in the British Basketball League and the 2004-2005 6th Man of the Year Award in the French ProA. We previously posted links to older articles appearing in the Daily Pennsylvanian, Cornell Chronicle and in New York Newsday about McCord's incredible path to attending Cornell. Below, a page from the 1996-1997 Cornell media guide and a video interview of McCord announcing his retirement from SIG Strasbourg.

  • Victory Bell Rings is among the numerous sites reporting that Boston College will host Penn State in the 2011 ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The site writes, "Second year [B.C.] coach Steve Donahue, the same coach of the magical Cornell team from two seasons ago, landed stud power forward Ryan Anderson (Long Beach, CA) who should make an immediate impact [for the Eagles]."

  • From the Twittersphere, Jake Mastbaum ('10) announced that he and Sam Aleinikoff ('10) are in the midst of filming their final Cornell Basketball-themed video as undergraduates at Cornell. Stay tuned for Slope's release of this very exciting project that has been in planning stages for several months. Meanwhile, also from Twitterspace, former Big Red skipper, Steve Donahue has formally announced that he has rejoined the world of Twitter. Coach Donahue gave Twitter a brief shot during the spring of 2009 when he was at Cornell, but the hobby just did not stick. While current Big Red head coach, Bill Courtney has not made the social media leap, all three of his assistants have done so, with Marlon Sears, Mike Blaine and Ricky Yahn all taking on the tweet game. And in the words of ESPN Radio's Brian Delaney, "Three things that don't quit: @coachmikeblaine 's energy, twitter feed and the exclamation point on his keyboard."
