News and Notes: Friday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Friday...
  • Incredibly, Cornell still has nine players on its 2011-2012 roster that were members of Cornell's 2009-2010 Sweet Sixteen team.
  • Cornell is mentioned in a pair of western Pennsylvania media articles in reference to the Big Red's recruitment of Nolan Cressler (Plum HS) Plum, PA, 6-5, G. See the Pittsburgh Tribune and the Plum Advance Leader for the stories.
  • Below, the stats for Jeff Aubry ('99) in his first three games of the BSN Finals in Puerto Rico. Aubry and his Arecibo Capitanes lead the series over Quebradillas 2 games to 1.

News and Notes: Thursday Edition (UPDATED)

Above, Cornell's starting five from the No. 17 nationally ranked Sweet 16 team of 2010. Below, some news and notes for Thursday....
  • Jeff Foote ('10) has been known to have his fun with the media, but yesterday the seven-footer tweeted the above cryptic message. Could Foote be signing on a Euro club with one of his former Cornell teammates, perhaps one of the above?
  • Below is a listing of Cornell's games on the 2011-2012 schedule which are already publicly announced or which are commonly known "return" games from a year ago.

  • Several websites have already started with the preseason national rankings. For example, College Sports Madness is counting down one day at a time and ranking the top 144 teams in the nation. Cornell opponents ranked thus far include Lehigh (No. 134) and Boston U. (No. 118). Similarly, The Hoops Report is counting down and ranking the nation's top 68 teams and has ranked thus far the following Cornell opponents: Princeton (No. 59).
Cornell - December 21. Most college basketball fans probably remember Cornell as one of the Cinderellas from the 2010 NCAA Tournament, but the Big Red has fallen a ways since then. Last season, the team went just 10-18 overall and 6-8 in the Ivy League, and though its top three scorers are all underclassmen, this is a game Penn State should win this deep into the season. It probably won't be like some of the other cupcakes on the non-conference slate, but if Penn State has any postseason aspirations, this is a game it has to have.

  • With the news yesterday of former Cornell assistant and current Hobart head coach, Izzi Metz joining the staff of Boston College with Steve Donahue, it is time we update our tree of coaches with connections to Cornell. Accordingly, below is a list of currently employed NCAA basketball coaches with past connections to Cornell University.
Jeff Jackson (Cornell Class of '84)-Head Coach of Furman University (Division I).

Kevin App (Cornell Class of '07)-Assistant coach at Army. Played for Cornell under Steve Donahue.

Yanni Hufnagel (Cornell Class of '06)-Assistant coach at Harvard. Served as student-manager at Cornell under Steve Donahue.

Steve Donahue-Head coach of Boston College. Served as head coach at Cornell between 2000-2010.

Mike Dement-Head coach of UNC-Greensboro (Division I). He served as head coach of Cornell between 1986-1991. In 1988 he led Cornell to the Ivy League title and the 1988 NCAA Tournament.

Zach Spiker-Head coach of Army. He served as an assistant coach at Cornell under Steve Donahue from 2004-2009.

Joe Burke-Head coach of Skidmore College (Division III). He was an assistant coach at Cornell under Steve Donahue between 2001-2004.

Izzi Metz-Former Head coach Hobart College (Division III). He served as a Cornell assistant coach for five seasons between 2001-2006 under Steve Donahue and is reportedly taking the basketball operations position at Boston College under Donahue.

Nat Graham-Associate Head Coach (assistant) at Boston College under Steve Donahue. Served as an assistant coach under Donahue at Cornell from 2007-2010.

Woody Kampmann-Assistant coach at Boston College under Steve Donahue. Served as an assistant coach under Donahue at Cornell from 2005-2010.

Steve Robinson-Assistant coach at North Carolina under Roy Williams. He was an assistant coach for Mike Dement at Cornell for two seasons, including on the 1988 Ivy League Championship team.

Paul Fortier-Assistant coach at Washington under Lorenzo Romar. He served as an assistant coach at Cornell during 2003-2005 under Steve Donahue.
Desmond Oliver-Assistant coach at Charlotte. He was an assistant coach at Cornell between 1998-2000 under Scott Thompson.

Ricky Yahn-Assistant coach at Longwood. He was an assistant coach at Cornell during 2010-2011 under Bill Courtney.
  • Finally, the blog Eagle in Atlanta, a Boston College fan site, weighs the pros and cons of Izzi Metz's hiring by Boston College. The Eagle writes:
Donahue fills out staff: "Meet the Metz"

Since Joe Jones took the BU job, Steve Donahue has been left with a opening on his staff. It looks like he will fill it with one of his former assistants Izzi Metz. Metz comes to BC after five seasons as the Head Coach at Hobart. Blaudschun speculates that Donahue might move Metz into an Ops position. I am not too concerned about which role he takes. My bigger issue is recruiting. Let's look at the Pros and Cons of Donahue hiring one of his own for the spot.

Pros
-- Metz already has a working relationship with Donahue. There is trust and an understanding of the systems. Metz will be familiar with how Donahue runs things around the program.
-- Metz has head coaching experience. It was at Hobart, but Metz still understands in game coaching.
-- Metz is the right age to make the jump to the big leagues. He's young enough to work hard and brings a young energy, but also has been around the block once. He won't get overwhelmed by the new level of competition.

Cons
-- Metz has never recruited at this level. He is filling the role left by our ace recruiter. Even if Donahue shifts duties a bit, Metz will have to recruit ACC talent for the first time. It is an entirely different process from Hobart or Cornell.
-- Doesn't have much experience outside of the Donahue environment. They haven't been together for a few years, but coaching Donahue's system at Hobart is not a huge career stretch from working for him at Cornell. One thing I liked about Jones is that he brought head coaching experience and the perspective of working as an assistant in an elite conference.

Donahue has been pretty solid in building the program so far, so Metz coming on board doesn't give me much pause. I just hope he can fill Jones's big shoes and keep up our momentum.

Cornell Basketball in the News: Steve Donahue to Hire Izzi Metz

The Boston Globe reports:
Boston College basketball coach Steve Donahue is in Florida on a recruiting mission, but apparently he is ready to fill the opening on his staff created when associate head coach Joe Jones left the Eagles last month to take over as the head coach at Boston University.
According to BC and Ivy League sources, Donahue is going to dip into the Ivy League pool once again and hire Hobart coach Izzi Metz. Metz spent five years at Cornell as Donahue's assistant before taking over the head job at Hobart in 2006.
Although nothing is official, Donahue will probably shuffle the priorities on his staff and move Nat Graham into an associate head coach's role and then slide Metz into a position, perhaps as Director of Basketball Operations.

Cornell owns a 5-4 lead in a series against Penn State dating back to February 16, 1900 when the teams first met in State College, Pa., just Cornell's second season of program existence. PSU won the first meeting between the programs 18-5 as the February 23, 1900 issue of the Cornell Daily Sun recaps the game above (which also accuses the Penn State spectators of interfering in the outcome). The teams also met in 1910, 1923, 1941, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 2005. In the December 5, 1972, meeting, Cornell defeated Penn State in Ithaca, 74-65.

News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...
  • In reference to the RPIs of Illinois' 2011-2012 opponents, the Peoria Journal Star writes, "the Illini also have time to grow up — the season opener on Nov. 11 against Loyola (197), plus games against Chicago State (339), Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (328), Coppin State (246) and Cornell (210). The Illini may also play Illinois State (255) in Cancun."
  • UWBadgers.com writes of Wisconsin assistant coach, Gary Close, "Close has interviewed for head coaching positions at Drake and Cornell. He felt like he was the perfect fit for Drake. So did many others. But he didn’t get the job. He thought Cornell would be ideal, too, especially since his dad went to school there. But that didn’t work out, either."

A Date in Cornell Basketball History: Cornell at Illinois

A December 19, 2011 trip to Illinois as a tribute return home game for Cornell senior, Chris Wroblewski (Highland Park, IL) is among the highlights for Cornell's 2011-2012 schedule. The two teams do have some history, facing each other in 1932, 1939, 1948 and 1961. The last game was certainly the most memorable for Cornell. During the 1961-1962 season, the Big Red raced out to a 14-2 start, which included a 72-60 win at Illinois on December 23, 1961. The win made headlines in the national wire services. Cornell finished the season 18-7 under head coach Sam MacNeil. The Cornell Daily Sun (below) published the news of Cornell's big Illinois win in the first issue following the winter break for students.

Gabe Norwood shared the court with Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant and other NBAers this weekend

George Mason alum Gabe Norwood has been playing professionally in the Phillipines for quite some time now.  This weekend he and other All-Stars from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) league squared off against some of the NBA's best. Some of the players he shared the court with were Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul. Quote from interaksyon.com:
“It was fun, absolutely a total experience. It’s unbelievable,” said Norwood, who rocked his new Kid ‘N Play haircut for the game.
Looking good Gabe.

News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Monday...
  • The Republican American notes that a Duquesne forward will join Louis Dale's German Club, Goettingen this season.
  • Throughout the year we provide periodic updates on Cornell's alumni playing professionally. Below, some updates:
-John McCord ('97) (SIG Strasbourg, Pro A France)-2010-2011 season concluded. The 6'6" forward and long time veteran of the European leagues averaged 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Kenner League Report

This year's Kenner League (aka Nike Pro City) action has been good with a lot of famous alum from area universities joining in. George Mason '08 alum Folarin Campbell made an appearance this weekend and played for Town Tavern along side Anali Okoloji. Campbell finished Saturday with 22 points and Okoloji scored 17, 11 of which came from the free-throw line as he was "aggressively attacking the hole".  Really what we want to hear about Okoloji but it's unfortunate we won't get to see him this upcoming season.  Overall Okoloji has looked good and he has a lot of potential to grow this season as he watches from the sidelines and takes everything in.

Among the others who have looked good at this year's Kenner league is freshman Corey Edwards.  The phrase "true point guard" will be thrown around a lot when talking about Edwards and he has looked more polished than the other freshman so far.  He has been showing good handles and vision while the flow of the summer league play seems to fit his style of game well.  His pass first mentality might help him earn more minutes this season under Paul Hewitt.

The other freshman Vaughn Gray and Erik Copes have both made progress this summer and are looking better each weekend.  Gray has shown off his athleticism and this past weekend found his scoring touch, see the unofficial box here. Copes has made some big strides in a short period of time. At the beginning of this summer league he looked lost and slow at times but has since found his rhythm and has shown off his excellent rebounding attributes. He loves to contest every shot in the paint and seems to be very good at staying in position.  At times he already looks like he could end up being the best "box-out" guy on the Mason roster next season.  We already knew he wasn't much of a scorer and he really needs to work on his post moves because right now he really doesn't have any.  Copes will continue to get some conditioning this summer and probably shed some pounds but the potential for him to be a force in the middle for Mason next season is there.

News and Notes: Saturday Edition

Below, news and notes for Saturday....
  • A year ago Jamal Cherry walked onto the 2010-2011 Cornell roster following an MCL injury which sidelined Dominick Scelfo. The Florida Courier provides an update on Cherry:
TAMPA PREP DUO TOGETHER AGAIN

Tampa college basketball players heating things up in the City of Orlando/Midnight Basketball Pro-Am Summer League at Dr. J.R. Smith Neighborhood Center where NBA players, College Players and Neighborhood Streetball Legends compete.

Jay Bowie (Marist) and Jamal Cherry (Cornell) both 2010 graduates of Tampa Prep and top scorers who led their high school team to the 2010 State Championship Game are back together again with the Brandon Bolts ProAm Team. Jay is averaging 12.3 points per game and Jamal 12.6 points per game. I had the chance to watch the duo play against the "A Team” which just happens to be the team of NBA twin players Joey and Stephen Graham. While the Brandon Bolts lost the game (not by much), it was clear that both Jay and Jamal have developed this past year into true collegiate players not intimidated by the speed and size of the Pro-Am level of play. Jay Bowie had a great season with Marist seeing lots of playing time and is expected to have a major role next year. In speaking with Jamal Cherry, he indicated that he walked on to the Cornell team and did not see much playing time this past year, but has been putting in "work” this summer and is determined to compete hard this upcoming year and help the team in anyway he can. He shared, "I am going back much more stronger and confident than last year”. From what I saw in this game, Jamal had 16 points and played lock down defense, he is definitely ready for the challenge back at Cornell. Both young men are looking forward to returning to their respective teams.
  • Below, some historical game action photos for Cornell vs. the Big Ten from the last 15 years:

November 19, 2005-Ryan Rourke at Penn State.

November 10, 2006-Adam Gore vs. Northwestern.

December 30, 2006-Andrew Naeve faces Iowa.

November 30, 2008-Jeff Foote against Indiana.

December 6, 2008-Ryan Wittman takes on Minnesota.

March 21, 2010-Alex Tyler, Louis Dale and Chris Wroblewski scramble for a loose ball against Wisconsin, NCAA Tournament, round of 32.

Below, some news and notes for Friday...
  • In summer league action, Cornell freshman Ned Tomic is averaging 13 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for his Allan's Wolfpack team in the Cleveland Pro Am. Jake Matthews' SPK Law team fell this week to PBC in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro Am championship game, 86-79. Josh Figini is playing for the Pat Madison Magic in the Howard Pulley Summer Pro League in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Among his teammates are the Timberwolves' Michael Beasley.
  • Delaware has released its schedule and we can now announce that the Big Red will serve as the Blue Hens' home opener on November 22. Note that this game is not the season opener for Cornell. While we are still unable to release Cornell's full nonconference schedule, it is common knowledge that Cornell owes nine (9) "return" games as part of the team's home-and-away series arrangements from a year ago. Five (5) additional games will round out the nonconference slate, three (3) of which will be against BCS conference opponents. Below are the expected series return games this upcoming season.
