GAME NOTES: The Harvard Crimson are set to take on the Cornell in Ivy League action from Newman Arena in Ithaca, New York this evening.
Harvard is 7-1 in Ivy action and continues to battle 7-0 Princeton for league supremacy. The Crimson are currently riding a three-game win streak that includes last Saturday's 85-78 decision over Brown. The lone Ivy loss to date came against Princeton back on February 4th by four points on the road.
As for Cornell, it had a modest two-game win streak halted with a 57-55 loss to Princeton last Saturday. The Big Red, who dominated the Ivy League last season, are just 2-6 against "Ancient Eight" foes in 2011. They are 6-16 overall this season and carry a 3-5 home record into tonight's affair.
Harvard crushed Cornell by a 78-57 final back in late January, but the Big Red still own a 90-69 series advantage over the Crimson.
Through 22 outings, the Crimson are generating 72.4 ppg on 46.9 percent shooting from the floor, and the team is led by Keith Wright's 15.6 ppg. The sophomore forward is shooting 59.4 percent from the floor and ripping down 8.5 rpg to go along with 35 blocks. Christian Webster adds 13.8 ppg for the Crimson, who are getting 11.5 ppg from Laurent Rivard and 10.4 ppg from Kyle Casey. Wright scored 22 points and ripped down 14 rebounds in the victory over Brown last time out, as he shot 8-of-10 from the floor while blocking five shots. Casey, who connected on 8-of-11 field goal attempts, finished with 19 points, and Webster scored 18 points. Brandyn Curry rounded out the double- digit scorers with 10 points for Harvard, who overcame 18 turnovers with a 35-24 rebounding advantage and a 16-7 edge in points from the foul line.
Cornell has struggled to generate offense this season, as it is shooting only 40.2 percent from the field en route to 66.7 ppg. The Big Red are permitting 69.8 ppg to opponents and are being outrebounded by nearly five boards per tilt. Chris Wroblewski is scoring 14.9 ppg to go along with 106 assists for Cornell, but his 38.3 percent field goal efficiency leaves much to be desired. Drew Ferry, a 38.2 percent shooter, adds 11.7 ppg, and Errick Peck provides 11.2 ppg. The Big Red connected on just 39.2 percent of their field goal attempts against Princeton on Saturday, including a 3-of-17 showing from three-point range. A 16-12 deficit in points from the foul line hurt the cause, as did a 31-24 rebounding disadvantage. Cornell lost despite committing only nine turnovers, half of what Princeton suffered. Wroblewski tallied 14 points in defeat, while Errick Peck finished with 13.
Expect Harvard to win this game on the road, as Wright will shine on the interior. This season has been tough to endure for Cornell after experiencing so much success last year.
