GAME NOTES: Following up their fourth overtime game of the season, the Cornell Big Red now prepare for the arrival of the Brown Bears for an Ivy League showdown at Newman Arena in Ithaca tonight.
Last night, Cornell was pushed to an extra period by Yale, but the hosts still came out on top as they held on for the 85-84 triumph versus the Bulldogs. The win was the second straight and the third in the last four outings for a Big Red group that is now 4-3 in conference play and alone in fourth place as a result.
Further down in the standings is Brown which, because of an 86-60 beat down by Columbia on Friday night, is just 1-6 in league play and now second-to-last in the standings ahead of only winless Dartmouth following a fourth consecutive setback.
Cornell leads the all-time series between these two squads by a count of 71-46, thanks in part to a 75-66 win in the most recent matchup last season. Brown is set to host the Big Red in just under two weeks in order to complete the season series.
The Bears were paced by Matt Sullivan who tallied 17 points as he converted 4- of-6 shots beyond the arc on Friday night, but it wasn't nearly enough to keep the team above water. Jean Harris produced 14 points as he too connected on four three-pointers, followed by Tellef Lundevall and Dockery Walker with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Brown grabbed an early two-point lead in the opening moments of the first half, but the team converted just 32.1 percent from the floor in the frame, making fewer overall field goals (nine) than the Lions had three-pointers in the first half (11). Part of the problem for the Bears was that they dressed just nine players and were missing an injured Sean McGonagill who did not travel with the team. McGonagill, a starter in 51 straight games before Friday night, leads the team in scoring with 14.0 ppg and is also first on the unit with 131 assists. Missing their top scorer is not something the Bears can work around, especially since they are averaging just 62.6 ppg overall to begin with.
Johnathan Gray scored a game-high 29 points and knocked down a crucial foul shot in the final seconds of overtime as the Big Red secured a thrilling one- point win over the Yale Bulldogs in Ivy League action at Newman Arena less than 24 hours ago. Also scoring in double figures for Cornell was Chris Wroblewski who tallied 18 points, adding 10 assists and seven rebounds as the team won for the third time in the last four outings. Cornell got away with just 53.8 percent shooting at the free-throw line while allowing the visitors to knock down 52.7 percent from the floor overall. Even though he finished with just six points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field, Drew Ferry is still the leading scorer for the Big Red on the season with his 11.4 ppg. However, when it comes to league outings Ferry has had a hard time throwing shots in the ocean, shooting a feeble 25.9 percent from the floor over seven outings, en route to a mere 6.6 ppg. As a group, Cornell is connecting on just 39.9 percent from the field and 29.5 percent beyond the arc in conference action.
Cornell has to be tired after going to overtime to pick up the win last night, but sleeping in their own beds has to give the Big Red an advantage over a Brown squad that's traveling after such an awful display on Friday night.
