ITHACA — Ten days has seemed like a month for the University at Albany basketball team. The Danes play Cornell in a non-league game Saturday afternoon at 2 at Newman Arena at Bartells Hall.
The Danes, the only team in America East with a winning record (5-4), haven’t played since beating Colgate 87-63 at SEFCU Arena on Dec. 7. In between, the Danes have completed the semester’s final exams and practiced.
“I am very anxious to play a game,” Gerardo Suero, Albany’s leading scorer, said. “I want to play so bad.”
Cornell’s arena seats 4,473, but Big Red Sports Information director Jeremy Hartigan (who is from Albany) said a crowd of 1,000 would be a good one. Students are gone from campus for Christmas break.
The Big Red are 3-4, but two of the wins have come against America East teams. Cornell beat winless Binghamton (0-7) 76-61 and Boston University, the preseason pick to win the league, 71-66. Both of those wins came at Newman Arena. The Big Red are 3-1 at home.
“They are good,” Albany coach Will Brown said. “They are a very balanced offensive team, and they play well at home. This is going to be a very big test for us.”

Aronhalt will keep playing despite bum knee
ALBANY — The University at Albany basketball team will play their first game in 10 days Saturday when the Danes take on Cornell in Ithaca. Leading scorer Gerardo Suero says his sprained ankle is getting better, and center John Puk says he feels the best he has felt all year (he had an infection in his left leg earlier this season).
Good health has not smiled on junior guard Logan Aronhalt, the Danes’ second leading scorer. Aronhalt has a case of Osgood-Schlatter, a painful condition in his right knee. At the end of the season, he will likely face surgery, but for now, he will continue to play.
The condition is an irritation of the patellar tendon and a painful lump appears just under the knee.
Coach Will Brown said the condition should not get worse if Aronhalt continues to play on it.
“Unless he takes a severe blow our gets a direct hit on it, he should be able to continue,” Brown said Friday. “He is a jump shooter, and a good athlete. Every time he stops, plants, and tries to jump or explode, he’ll feel it. It’s a tolerance of pain thing, and he is a tough kid.”
Brown said he will try and limit Aronhalt’s practice time. He said after Saturday’s game, he will give him Sunday off, and then hope Aronhalt can play Monday at St. Francis (N.Y.).
Aronhalt, who is averaging 14.9 points per game, leads the Danes in minutes played (34.6 per game). The injury was noticed before Albany lost to Siena 64-60 on Dec. 5. In that game, Aronhalt played a team-high 39 minutes and scored 13 points.
Two days later, he played 33 minutes and scored 16 in an 87-63 home win over Colgate.
“I ask him every day how he feels,” Brown said. “And he tells me the same thing every day. He says he’s OK.”
