HEAD COACH STEVE DONAHUE
Cornell head coach Steve Donahue is in his 10th season at Cornell (124-135, .479) ... Donahue became the fourth Robert E. Gallagher ‘44 Coach of Men’s Basketball at Cornell on Sept. 6, 2000.


ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men’s basketball team will attempt to capture its first-ever Holiday Festival title beginning with a first round matchup against Davidson on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 12:00 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. Barry Leonard and Matt Grassie will provide the call on 93.5 WVBR-FM, while live audio of the game can be heard on the internet as part of the RedCast subscription service. All four games of the tournament will be televised by the Madison Square Garden Network.

This will be the fourth appearance in the Holiday Festival for Cornell and the first since 1970. Cornell is 1-5 all-time in the tournament, with its lone win coming in its last game, a 64-60 victory over Manhattan in the 1970 consolation game.

The two-time defending Ivy League champions bring a five-game win streak into the tournament and continue a run of 10 of its first 12 games away from home. Cornell has road wins at Alabama, Massachusetts and Drexel, a neutral court win over Vermont and a home win over Saint Joseph’s early in the season.

The All-Ivy trio of Louis Dale, Jeff Foote and Ryan Wittman have lived up to their billing so far this season. Dale is averaging 10.2 points, 5.0 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game, while Foote is at 13.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. Wittman, the second all-time leading scorer at Cornell, paces the squad with his 18.0 points. Additionally, Chris Wroblewski, last season’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year, is putting up 10.7 points per game as the fourth double-figure scorer. Seniors Mark Coury, Jon Jaques, Alex Tyler and Geoff Reeves, juniors Max Groebe and Adam Wire and freshman Errick Peck round out the rotation.

ABOUT DAVIDSON
• Conference: Southern Conference
• Head Coach: Bob McKillop (Hofstra ‘72), 21st season.
• The Wildcats bring a 2-6 (1-1 Southern) record into contests against Gonzaga (Dec. 12) and the College of New Jersey (Dec. 17) before heading into play at the Holiday Festival.
• Davidson has played a challenging non-league schedule so far, with close losses to Butler, South Florida, Penn State and Rhode Island.
• Jake Cohen leads three double figure scorers at 13.0 ppg., joining Will Archambault (12.5 ppg.) and JP Kulhman (10.4 ppg.).
• Davidson is shooting just .401 from the floor, but is outrebounding opponents 37.4-33.5.
• Head coach Bob McKillop served as head coach for the U.S. Under-18 national team in 2008. One of his court coaches during the tryouts for the team was Cornell head coach Steve Donahue.

CORNELL VS. THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE
• Cornell is 2-1 all-time against current members of the Southern Conference.
• The Big Red will be playing Davidson for the first time, but has played Georgia Southern (1-0) and UNC Greensboro (1-1) previously.
• The Big Red has never played Appalachian State, Charleston, Chattanooga, Citadel, Elon, Furman, Samford, Western Carolina or Wofford.
• This is the only scheduled meeting this season against a team from the Southern Conference.
• Cornell’s last win over a Southern Conference team came when it knocked off Georgia Southern 80-76 on Dec. 29, 1993 in the first round of the Olds Spartan Classic.

THE SERIES
• This will be the first-ever meeting between Cornell and Davidson.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S
• Conference: Big East
• Head Coach: Norm Roberts (Queens College ‘87), sixth season.
• The Red Storm brings a 7-1 record and a loft RPI in the 20s into a contest against Fordham (Dec. 13) prior to the Holiday Festival..
• St. John’s has won the Holiday Festival 14 times.
• D.J. Kennedy leads scorers at 16.9 ppg. to lead three double figure scorers.
• The Red Storm have wins over St. Bonaventure, Siena, Temple and Georgia so far this season.
• Its only loss so far has been an 80-71 defeat at Duke on Dec. 5.

CORNELL VS. THE BIG EAST
• Cornell is 47-117 all-time against current members of the Big East.
• The Big Red is 0-1 against St. John’s and has also played Cincinnati (1-0), Connecticut (1-1), Georgetown (1-0), Marquette (0-1), Notre Dame (1-7), Pittsburgh (5-11), Providence (0-1), Rutgers (1-1), Seton Hall (0-3), Syracuse (31-86), Villanova (2-2) and West Virginia (3-3).
• The Big Red has never played DePaul, Louisville or South Florida.
• This is the final of three possible meetings with Big East schools this season for the Big Red. Cornell lost to Seton Hall 89-79 on Nov. 20 and to Syracuse 88-73 on Nov. 24.
• Cornell’s last win against a Big East team came in a 63-58 triumph over Villanova in the Quaker City Tournament on Dec. 30, 1969.
• Head coach Steve Donahue is 0-9 against the Big East at Cornell.

THE SERIES
• The first and only meeting between the two programs happened in the first round of the 2008 NIT Preseason Tip-Off at Boston College, an 86-75 win for the Red Storm.
• Ryan Wittman scored 25 points and Jeff Foote had 20 points, seven rebounds, five blocked shots and three assists.
• For St. John’s, Anthony Mason Jr. had 24 points, while D.J. Kennedy had 22.

ABOUT HOFSTRA
• Conference: Colonial Athletic Conference
• Head Coach: Tom Pecora (Adelphi ‘83), ninth season.
• The Pride bring a 6-3 record into a contest with New Hampshire (Dec. 12) prior to Holiday Festival play.
• Junior guard Charles Jenkins is the reigning CAA Player of the Week and is averaging 19.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists this season.
• Hofstra went 21-11 a season ago, its fourth 20-win season in the last five years.
• The Pride have done it on defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 39 percent overall and 27 percent from 3-point range.

CORNELL VS. THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
• Cornell is 6-15 all-time against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association.
• The Big Red is 3-2 against Hofstra and has also played Delaware (1-0), Drexel (1-2), Georgia State (0-1), James Madison (0-1), UNC-Wilmington (0-1), Northeastern (1-4), Old Dominion (0-1), Virginia Commonwealth (0-2) and WIlliam & Mary (0-1).
• The Big Red has never played George Mason or Towson.
• This is the second of two possible meetings with CAA schools this season for the Big Red. Cornell knocked off Drexel 61-54 on Nov. 29 in Philadelphia.
• Head coach Steve Donahue is 1-3 against the CAA at Cornell.

THE SERIES
• Cornell leads the all-time series 3-2 dating back to the first meeting between the programs in 1980.
• The two teams have met on a neutral court one time, with the Pride capturing an 82-56 victory in the first round of the 1994 Mile High Classic in Boulder, Colo.
• Cornell’s last win against Hofstra came on Jan. 8, 1994 in Hempstead, a 65-49 Big Red victory.

THE STORY LINE
• Cornell brings a five-game win streak into the 2009 Madison Square Garden Holiday Festival.
• The Big Red will face a Davidson team that has won the Southern Conference regular season and/or tournament title in each of the last eight years in the first round.
• It will be Cornell’s fourth appearance in the Holiday Festival and the first since the 1970-71 season (lost to No. 2 South Carolina 83-60, defeated Manahattan 64-60 in consolation game). The Big Red is 1-5 all-time in the tournament, also making appearances in 1958-59 (lost to Utah 80-61 and Syracuse 66-60 in consolation game) and 1963-64 (lost to Minnesota 89-77 and Providence 69-63 in the consolation game).
• Cornell will be playing its first game in two weeks after going through the final exams period. In its last contest, the Big Red knocked off Saint Joseph’s 78-66 on Dec. 6 at Newman Arena. The Big Red is 2-7 following exam break under head coach Steve Donahue, including last year’s 79-70 home win over LaSalle.
• This will be the second trip to Madison Square Garden for Cornell athletics this season following a 3-3 tie between the men’s hockey team and defending national champion Boston University on Nov. 28 in front of a sold-out MSG crowd.

REVIEWING THE SAINT JOSEPH’S GAME
• Cornell opened the second half on a 25-4 run and held off several Saint Joseph’s charges after halftime to extend its win streak to five games, knocking off the Hawks 78-66 on Dec. 6 at Newman Arena.
• Senior Ryan Wittman led four Big Red players in double figures with 17 points, while Chris Wroblewski and Jon Jaques each had 15.
• Wroblewski added six assists and three rebounds.
• Jaques, in his first collegiate start, added two rebounds, and assist and a steal in 23 minutes.
• Also hitting for double figures was Geoff Reeves, who scored 13 points and had four rebounds.
• The Big Red improved to 2-0 this season against Atlantic 10 teams

PLAYER NOTES
• The top four players in the backcourt, seniors Louis Dale, Geoff Reeves, Ryan Wittman and sophomore Chris Wroblewski have made 68-77 free throws this season (.883), including 23-of-25 in the final three minutes of games within 10 points (.920).
• Senior Ryan Wittman had a career-low four points at UMass, but has averaged 19.3 points in the seven games since.
• Sophomore Chris Wroblewski is 16-of-34 from 3-point range in his last seven games (47 percent) after hitting just 1-of-5 (20 percent) in his first two.
• Junior Adam Wire has 17 of his 38 rebounds on the offensive glass, while 29 of Jeff Foote’s 80 rebounds have also come on the offensive end.
• In Cornell’s seven wins this season, Mark Coury has made 16-of-20 shots from the floor (.800), while Geoff Reeves has hit 23-of-35 shots (.657).
• During Cornell’s five-game win streak, senior Louis Dale has 27 assists and just 10 turnovers. He has 17 assists and five turnovers in the last three games.
• Senior Jeff Foote has three double-doubles in his last six games.
• Foote, a career 62 percent free-throw shooter, has made 22-of-29 from the line in the last four games (.759).

TEAM NOTES
• Cornell has scored at least 70 points in seven of nine contests.
• Cornell has a positive assist:turnover ratio in eight of its nine games this season.
• The team has hit 24 more 3-pointers this season than its opponents and has 36 more assists.
• Its .769 free-throw percentage, if maintained, would surpass the school record of .761 set in 2007-08.
• The Big Red has double figure offensive rebounds in seven of its last eight games.
• After taking at least 18 3-pointers in each of its first five games (3-2), the Big Red has taken 17 or less in three of the last four (4-0).

NEXT UP
• Cornell will return to Philadelphia after the holiday break on Dec. 29 when it vists La Salle at 4 p.m.
• The Big Red returns home on Dec. 31 when it meets Penn State-Behrend at 2 p.m. at Newman Arena.
