Below, an announcement from Drexel University.The Drexel men's basketball team hosts the Legends Classic beginning on Friday afternoon. There will be three-straight days of doubleheader action as Ivy-power Cornell, Vermont and Toledo will participate in the round-robin tournament. Former Drexel great Bob Buckley will be honored at halftime of Sunday's contest as Drexel's Legend.
The tournament tips off on Friday at 2:00 when Toledo faces Cornell. The Dragons host former America East-foe Vermont immediately following the game. Saturday, Cornell plays Vermont in the first game followed by the Drexel-Toledo tilt. On Sunday, play begins at noon, with Toledo facing Vermont. Drexel wraps up the Classic with a 2:30 game against Cornell.
Bob Buckley was one of the top athletes of time during his days at Drexel. He played three seasons of basketball and baseball at Drexel University. He was captain of the team as a senior as the Dragons went 14-3 and represented the MASCAC in the NCAA Championships. During his three years, Buckley’s teams went 38-16.
Buckley averaged 14.9 rebounds during the 1954-55 season, the second highest rebound average in school history. He is still fourth on the all-time rebound average list with just under 12 boards per game. Despite playing three seasons, Buckley’s 662 career rebounds still rank him in the top 20 in that category at Drexel. He could score as well. Buckley averaged better than 20 points a game in 1956-57 and is fourth all-time on the career scoring average list with 17.8 per game.
Buckley and his company played a major role in the upgrade of Drexel’s Athletic Complex at 43rd and Powelton. The upper field, which is the field hockey team’s home, is named after Mr. Buckley and the training room at the field is named in honor of Mr. Buckley’s grandson.
