GAMES NOTES: Columbia and Cornell will play two games against each other in the next week beginning when the Big Red head to Levien Gymnasium this evening to battle Columbia in an Ivy League matchup.
Cornell has won two of its last three games but dropped its last time out with a 64-52 loss to Penn last Saturday. The short winning streak came after the Big Red dropped five straight to close out December. Cornell will return home to host Columbia next Saturday.
Columbia has lost its last two games after putting together a four game win streak that began on December 30th. The losses came to Penn and Princeton and put the Lions in last place of the Ivy League.
There is a long history in this Ivy League rivalry with Columbia leading the all-time series 120-96. Cornell ripped off seven straight wins between 2007 and 2010, but Columbia took the season series last year.
Cornell had its worst offensive performance of the season in the loss to Penn. The 52 points were the lowest since an opening night loss to Saint Bonaventure in which the Big Red managed only 58 points. Cornell shot just 37.5 percent from the floor in the loss including just 3-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc. The Big Red also wasted free throw opportunities, netting only 54.2 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe. On the season Cornell is averaging 66.4 points per game. Freshman forward Shonn Miller (9.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg) had 19 points in the game as he continues a solid rookie campaign. Miller has scored in double figures in three straight games and five of the last seven after doing so only twice in the teams first nine. Miller also had 10 rebounds in the game to give him his second career double-double. Senior guard Drew Ferry is the teams leading scorer at 12.6 points per game but has struggled recently scoring Tony 4.0 points per game in the last two contests, including a scoreless game in the win over Princeton. Senior guard Chris Wroblewski is the teams primary facilitator on offense with the third best assist average in the Ivy League at 5.4 per game.
Junior guard Brian Barbour is the focal point of Columbia's offense which averages 65.2 points per game. Barbour leads the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game and has been even more prolific in scoring 25 points in each of the last two games while shooting 15-of-27 in those contests. The Lions should have an advantage in the paint with senior center Mark Cisco. He is third on the team in scoring at 9.1 points per game and leads Columbia's strong effort on the glass with 6.4 rebounds per game. Cisco had his second double-double of the season in the loss to Princeton scoring 12 and bringing down 10 rebounds. As a team Columbia has been able to limit opponents to just 59.2 points per game by limiting second chance opportunities. Behind Cisco the Lions average 35.8 rebounds per game which is the seconds best total in the Ivy League. Sophomore guard Meiko Lyles (10.2 ppg, 43.8 3P%) has cooled off considerably in the past three games after scoring a career high 25 points in a win over Farliegh-Dickinson. Lyles has scored in double figures in only two of the four games since including only four in the loss to Princeton.
Columbia has the best player in this matchup in Barbour who will help Columbia match the output of Cornell's backcourt heavy attack. With a definite advantage on the inside with Cisco, the Lions should be able to capture their first conference victory.
