News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...

  • Aaron Osgood ('11) and Adam Wire ('11) report from their blog, Danish Duo, that their first game is on Saturday. Osgood and Wire play for the Vaerlose club in Denmark. Vaerlose will face the Aalborg Vikings in the opener which features a familiar face to the Cornellians, former Lehigh stalwart point guard, Marquis Hall. Below, Louis Dale ('10) defends Hall in 2008 while in the background, Wire and Osgood watch the action from the bench.
  • The Bleacher Report writes on the topic of "Showdowns We Can't Wait to See" in regards to the newly aligned ACC and states of a highly anticipated Boston College vs. Syracuse match up, "Boston College coach Steve Donahue has faced Jim Boeheim a handful of times in the past while coaching the underdog Cornell Big Red- and he gave the Orange a run for their money."

Apparently Andre Cornelius was arrested for credit card fraud

We have learned that senior guard Andre Cornelius was arrested and will be arraigned tomorrow on felony credit card fraud charges.

Not news you want to hear with less than a month to go before official practices start.

Here is the official statement from the University I received:
"[Andre] Cornelius has been summarily suspended from the team as a result of the charges filed against him. The suspension will be in effect until the legal and University judicial processes have been completed."
If you are keeping score this isn't the first time Cornelius has been suspended by the team.

More on the story here from the Post's Steven Goff.

9/20 UPDATE: Cornelius was arraigned today and agreed to appear in court in November, where he will then enter his plea. I think it's safe to say he won't be available for the all important NIT Tip-off games which start November 14. Would have to imagine he ends up pleaing to a lesser charge and doing community service. All this would most likely result in him being suspended for anywhere between 3-5 games this season. That's just my guess though as their could be a bunch of other circumstances we don't know about.

The following day, Wittman was reportedly ice cold shooting, going 1/8 from the floor and finished with 3 points while Foote added 10 points and 7 rebounds in a 77-74 defeat to PLK league rival, Silesia Wroclaw. In the Sunday game, Zastal fell to 0-3 in the tournament with a loss to PGE Turow, a league rival, 78-60. Once again Wittman finished with 3 points while Foote added 9. While there has been no official announcement from Zastal, some media sources, including the Zielona Gora Gazetta have speculated that the club might part ways with Wittman and that he and his agent are already looking at other clubs. Also in Europe, Louis Dale ('10) (No. 12 below) scored 8 points but his Goettingen club of Germany's premier league fell to league rival Artland in the Niedersachsen Cup, a preseason tournament. Meanwhile, Cody Toppert ('05) netted 14 points as his Spanish 3rd division club, Ourense (LEB Silver) picked up a 91-79 win over Breogan of Spain's higher 2nd division (LEB Gold) on Saturday in the semifinal of the Copa Galicia preseason tournament. Toppert followed up on Sunday with 6 points in a 72-70 loss to Obradoiro of Spain's elite ACB league in the championship game. Toppert (No. 33 below) holds his team's runner up trophy.
