Cornell Basketball in the News

The Ithaca Journal recaps the 2008-2009 year in athletics in the Ithaca area. The Journal notes, "Cornell men's basketball team: After winning its second straight Ivy League title, Cornell lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Missouri, 78-59, on March 20."

The Journal also recognizes two key dates during the 2008-2009 season:

* Dec. 26: Cornell men's basketball coach Steve Donahue is named the Van Sickle Male Coach of the Year by The Journal.

* Feb. 13: Junior Ryan Wittman breaks Cornell's career record for 3-pointers and the Big Red set a single-game record for assists (31) in a 96-75 win over Harvard.

Alumni News: Former Cornell Assistant Takes Position at Canisius

It was announced today that former Cornell Assistant Coach, Desmond Oliver has taken an assistant coaching position with Canisius College of the MAAC Conference. Oliver joins the Griffs from the University of Georgia.

Recruiting News

Below, some recruiting news from the Ivy League. Pictured above (No. 42, left), Cornell's Mark Coury, a 6'9" transfer from the University of Kentucky.

According to TexasHoops.com, San Antonio Southwest's Justin Alexander, 6'9" 215 lb. forward is hearing from Indiana State, Northern Arizona, Texas State, Weber State and San Diego, along with Yale, Princeton and Brown. Alexander is a 4.0 student who scored 1850 (out of 2400) on his SAT. "I can't count on playing pro," Alexander said, "so if I go to a school like Yale, I pretty much can do anything I want after I graduate."

Frantz Massenat, a 6'3" point guard from Trenton Catholic Academy in Hamilton, New Jersey, is currently involved in campus visits to UMass, Boston University, Harvard, and Northeastern according to Scout.com.

Recruiting News: Heldring Makes His Choice

As we previously reported, sources indicated that Fred Heldring, a 6'10" forward trom the Chicago suburbs, would decide between Cornell and William & Mary. Today the New Trier High School big man made his college decision. ChicagoHoops.com reports Heldring commited to W&M today during his campus visit. Davidson, Southern Illinois, San Francisco and Wisconsin-Milwaukee were among the other schools which already offered scholarships.

Recruiting News

Below we provide a recruiting update from around the Ivy League. Above, Cornell's Louis Dale during the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

It was confirmed that Alex Fieldcamp has enrolled at Cornell. But with 21 players on the roster, it is not known whether the incoming freshman will be given an opportunity to walk-on and join the program.

RedHawkInsider.com reports that Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Ball State, Wright State, Cornell, and Harvard have all offered Griffin McKenzie, a 6'9" 210 lb. forward from Cincinnati Moeller High School. Other schools still showing interest heading into the July period are Cincinnati, Wake Forest, Xavier, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Providence, and Butler. McKenzie declined to list a leader for his services but indicated he plans on visiting Notre Dame and Harvard.

New England Recruiting Report notes that Matt Brown (6'3"), Joe Sharkey (6'2"), and Evan Cummins (6'7"), three Northfield Mount Hermon School (Massachusetts) players are in the midst of a whirlwind tour of campus visits and attendance at camps at several Ivy League schools, including Penn, Princeton and Yale.

Mike Sullivan of Scout.com mentioned that Joey Gripper, a 6'0" guard from Abington Friends School outside of Philadelphia has an offer on the table from Drexel. Gripper is also getting interest from Penn, Harvard, St. Joseph's and La Salle.

The Daily Pennsylvanian confirmed that former Quaker, Harrison Gaines has transferred to Cal-Riverside. The Cornell Basketball Blog previously published the news after receiving a tip from an anonymous source.
