Wroblewski Named Candidate For Lowe's Senior Class Award

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior guard Chris Wroblewski has been named one of 30 finalists for the Lowe's Senior Class Award it was announced today by the committee. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. He joins Penn's senior guard Zack Rosen as the only Ivy League players on the list.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 2011-12 candidate class includes three men's players who were members of last year's CoSIDA Academic All-American team (including Wroblewski), one Associated Press All-American and seven players who are on teams ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 25 poll. From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the 2011-12 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in late January. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the men's Senior CLASS Award winner during the 2012 NCAA Men's Final Four, which will be held March 31 and April 2 in New Orleans.

Wroblewski was a third-team Capital One Academic All-American as a junior and has twice been named to the academic all-district team. The two-year team captain has been involved in numerous charitable endeavors and has been a four-year starter on the court. His teams have won two Ivy titles and is a two-year member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as the nation's top point guard. A second-team All-Ivy pick as a junior, he was the conference's leader in steals and was second in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and sixth in scoring. He has twice led the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage.

Wroblewski and his Big Red teammates open the 2011-12 season when they visit St. Bonaventure on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.

News and Notes: Friday Edition

• Cornell travels to Siena for a Saturday scrimmage against the Saints. The scrimmage is not open to the public and the media are not permitted to report on the scrimmage per NCAA rules.
  

• For what it is worth, well-known college basketball statistician, Ken Pomeroy has projected Cornell to finish 9-5 in the Ivy League, tying with Princeton for second place.

• The Trenton Times profiles Princeton from the program's media day and notes, "They open a week from Saturday against Wagner. The Ivy League season begins Jan. 13 at Cornell."

• Cornell alums, Adam Wire ('11) (above) and Aaron Osgood ('11), both professional basketball teammates for the Vaerlose club in Denmark, recently updated their blog and note, "Shout out to whoever commented on the Cornell BB Blog and demanded an update."

• Speaking of alumni, Louis Dale ('11) and his Goettingen club of Germany face Besiktas of Turkey in the Euro Challenge on November 22. Besiktas features NBA All-Star Deron Williams of the Nets as well as Semi Erden of the Cavs.

Kenpom preseason ratings have George Mason going 19-8 (13-5 CAA)

Anyone who is a college basketball enthusiasts follows the unbelievable stats and information kenpom.com supplies each year. The site has just released their preseason ratings which projects wins/losses throughout the season. It updates after every game and is usually pretty darn accurate. Currently they have Mason going 19-8 overall and 13-5 in the CAA. Keep in mind though that they only have the NIT Tip-off first round game against FIU on the schedule and not the potential next game against either Virginia Tech or Monmouth. You can also notice that they have the Patriots ranked #56 overall on their preseason Pomeroy ratings, similar to the popular RPI system.  

Overall I think the projections are a fair estimate for this team. They might lose an early game on the schedule to someone they shouldn't, such as Bucknell, Manhattan, or Charleston as the group finds their identity.  I agree with the splitting of the ODU and VCU series and a close loss to Drexel. Their projections have Mason, ODU, and Drexel finishing 13-5 in the conference, wouldn't that be interesting? However, I do not know if Mason could end up being tied for 1st after splitting series with ODU and VCU and losing their only game to Drexel. They'd have to do more in the conference schedule in my opinion but overall I think these projections are a fair assessment.

News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Below, some news and notes...

• Cornell Athletics updated the 2011-2012 roster with adjusted heights and weights for each of the players. Below is the 2011-2012 roster with notes indicating the changes in heights and weights from a year ago. Eitan Chemerinski led all players with the biggest increase, adding 13 pounds. He was followed by impressive summers from Josh Figini (plus 10 pounds), Errick Peck (plus 9 pounds) and Dwight Tarwater (plus 8 pounds). Other notable changes included Drew Ferry's height reduced from the misleading 6'4" to his actual 6'2". Jake Matthews also was listed as losing 10 lbs. from his frame.
  

• In an interview with Around the Res, Steve Donahue talks about his Boston College offense and makes a comparison back to Cornell:

Q: What about your offense in the paint? A lot of times your offense is characterized as shooting a lot of threes but will you work to do more in the paint this year with the big guys coming in?

A: No doubt. I think last year it even surprised me that we were able to get as many open shots, and I thought they were good shots, but a lot of open threes. I think when we switch from Joe at the 5 and Cori at the 4, and then John Cahill or Danny Rubin, and Reggie and Biko you had five guys out there that really shot it. I think that was our strength in a lot of ways, putting people out, especially with Reggie's ability to get to the rim and then kick it to a kid whose feet are set ready to shoot a three, and we did that to a point at Cornell in different years but we also had a 7 foot kid in Jeff Foote, and Jeff was a big part of our success there too, making people guard us in the low block.

A.P. Features Cornell's Season Opening Opponent

The Associated Press published a story on Cornell's season opening opponent, St. Bonaventure and its superstar, Andrew Nicholson. The A.P. notes, "The Bonnies return four starters, and have experienced depth at several positions in preparing to open their season hosting Cornell on Nov. 11."
