News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

• Fans interested in watching online Cornell's season opener on 11.11.11 at St. Bonaventure will be able to do so via Bonnies All Access. Note: single game Bonnies All Access subscriptions have not yet been made available for purchase.
  

• Last year in the prestigious Euro Cup, Louis Dale ('10) and his Goettingen club of Germany faced Turkish club Besiktas and its former NBA star Allen Iverson. Goettingen will face Besitkas again this year but in a different international tournament, this time its the 2011-2012 Euro Challege. And once again Besiktas will have star power as it boasts NBA All-Star Deron Williams (Nets) as well as NBAers Zaza Pachulia (Hawks) and Semih Erden (Cavs). Dale goes head-to-head with Williams and Besiktas on November 22. Speaking of Dale, last night in his season opener in the German premier league, the BBL, Dale scored 9 points and dished 4 assists. Goettingen, however, was pounded by league rival, the Brose Baskets, 107-63. NBA vets Casey Jacobson (15 points) and P.J. Tucker (16 points) led the way for Brose.

You can tell the NBA is in trouble when you need the best players of the 70s, 80s, and 90s to grace your cover. Seriously, basketball is just not what it used to be. Luckily, 2K Sports' NBA 2K series continues to be what it used to be. Even better, they seem to improve it every year. Does NBA 2K12 continue its Jordan-esque run of greatness? Or does it promise six championships and choke in the finals?

NBA 2K12 is a blast and a must-have for any NBA fan.It’s probably the closest you’re going to get to an NBA game this year. If 2K keeps this up, they’re going to have to insert their own game into their NBA Legends mode next year. A NBA 2K game inside an NBA 2K game—2K-ception!

News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Tuesday...

• A reminder, Cornell's Red-White Game, the annual open-to-the-public intersquad scrimmage is scheduled for October 22 at Newman Arena. The scrimmage tips off at approximately 4 pm following the home football game against Brown. The Red-White Game also coincides with the basketball program's Alumni Weekend where former players are invited to return back to Cornell. There is no expected online broadcast for the Red-White Game, but those plans could change.
  

• Per PrimerHora.com, while Jeff Aubry ('99) was selected for inclusion on the Puerto Rico national team, he has opted not to participate in the Pan Am Games and will instead join the team in early 2012 in its preparation for Olympic qualifying. Aubry will miss the Pan Am Games due to his renewed contract with his professional club, the Veracruz Rojos of the Mexican premier league.
  

• Former Cornell assistant coach, Jay Larranaga, now the head coach of the Erie Bay Hawks in the NBA D-League is quoted in Deadspin about his team's open tryouts.

• We updated our last roster report to include projected roster sizes for the Ivy League teams for the 2012-2013 season. These numbers will continue to change as the Ivy programs add additional recruits from the high school class of 2012.
  

• With Jon Jaques' ('10) recent hire as an assistant coach at Stevens Tech, below we update our tree of currently employed NCAA basketball coaches with rooted connections to Cornell University.
  

Jeff Jackson (Cornell Class of '84)-Head Coach of Furman University (Division I).

Jon Jaques (Cornell Class of '10)-Assistant coach at Stevens Tech (Division III). Played for Cornell under Steve Donahue.

Kevin App (Cornell Class of '07)-Assistant coach at Army. Played for Cornell under Steve Donahue.

Yanni Hufnagel (Cornell Class of '06)-Assistant coach at Harvard. Served as student-manager at Cornell under Steve Donahue.

Steve Donahue-Head coach of Boston College. Served as head coach at Cornell between 2000-2010.

Mike Dement-Head coach of UNC-Greensboro (Division I). He served as head coach of Cornell between 1986-1991. In 1988 he led Cornell to the Ivy League title and the 1988 NCAA Tournament.

Zach Spiker-Head coach of Army. He served as an assistant coach at Cornell under Steve Donahue from 2004-2009.

Joe Burke-Head coach of Skidmore College (Division III). He was an assistant coach at Cornell under Steve Donahue between 2001-2004.

Izzi Metz-Former Head coach Hobart College (Division III). He served as a Cornell assistant coach for five seasons between 2001-2006 under Steve Donahue and is currently an assistant coach and head of basketball operations at Boston College under Donahue.

Nat Graham-Associate Head Coach (assistant) at Boston College under Steve Donahue. Served as an assistant coach under Donahue at Cornell from 2005-2010.

Woody Kampmann-Assistant coach at Boston College under Steve Donahue. Served as an assistant coach under Donahue at Cornell from 2007-2010.

Ryan Woerner-Former student intern coach under Steve Donahue during the 2009-2010 season and assistant coach for Cornell's women's team during 2010-2011. Currently an assistant at SUNY New Paltz (Division III).

Steve Robinson-Assistant coach at North Carolina under Roy Williams. He was an assistant coach for Mike Dement at Cornell for two seasons, including on the 1988 Ivy League Championship team.

Paul Fortier-Assistant coach at Washington under Lorenzo Romar. He served as an assistant coach at Cornell during 2003-2005 under Steve Donahue.

Desmond Oliver-Assistant coach at Charlotte. He was an assistant coach at Cornell between 1998-2000 under Scott Thompson.

Ricky Yahn-Assistant coach at Longwood. He was an assistant coach at Cornell during 2010-2011 under Bill Courtney.

Rhode Island added to schedule for the home opener

Today George Mason announced their home opener and final non-conference opponent, Rhode Island from the Atlantic 10.  The opener is slated for November 11th which is the Friday before the team travels to Blacksburg, VA for the 1st round of NIT Tip-Off.  I like the addition of an A10 school especially since they don't have Dayton on the schedule this year. The Rams have some big names on their schedule for this year so they could end up with a pretty good RPI number.  They only return two starters but hey at this point so does Mason.  Should make for a solid home opener and early test for the Patriots.

Rhode Island's website mentions that this will be the start of a three-year series. Also Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times notes that the Rams haven't finished outside the RPI top 110 since 2005-2006.

2013 center Tonye Jekiri visits George Mason

Paul Hewitt and his staff seem to be heavily recruiting centers, the latest is 2013 6'11" prospect Tonye Jekiri, who visited George Mason unofficially this weekend.  It's really early to be talking about 2013 prospects, but the staff has to get after the good ones early and Jekiri is an example of a recruit whose stock could rise quickly.  Hewitt is probably looking to pair a big time center in the future with freshman forward Erik Copes.  If he does the Patriots could end up with a bruising front court that would give the rest of the CAA real problems. Legit centers are very hard to come by for mid-major programs as they area a scarce commodity in college basketball. Landing one who isn't completely raw or under the radar is something we rarely have seen at George Mason or the CAA for that matter.

Another tidbit of news today for Mason basketball is an ESPN.com article by Andy Katz that mentions both Ryan Pearson and Erik Copes as 'players who might end up on the Wooden list':

Ryan Pearson, George Mason: The Patriots are a trendy pick for the top 25 and a lot of that has to do with the versatility of Pearson.

Erik Copes, George Mason: Copes was bound for George Washington before Karl Hobbs was fired, but instead he'll be a headline performer for the Patriots and first-year coach Paul Hewitt.
