News and Notes: Saturday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Saturday...

• The Olean Times Herald writes of St. Bonaventure's schedule and its opponents' RPIs from a year ago, "Bona has just four out-of-conference home games at this point: Arkansas State (178), Canisius (183), Cornell (215) and St. Francis (259), nobody truly terrible, but nobody that will boost the Bonnies’ RPI or increase their postseason chances. They’re all should-be wins, but they could also be RPI-killers should they lose any."

• Jeff Foote ('10) led all scorers with 14 points while Ryan Wittman ('10) added 11 points as their club, Zastal of Poland's PLK league knocked off league rival, PGE Turów, 97-80 in exhibition action on Friday. Princeton alumnus, Konrad Wysocki finished with 9 points for PGE. Other PGE scorers included Dallas Lauderdale (Ohio State) with 5 points, Ronald Moore (Siena) 7 points and David Jackson (Western Illinois) with 14 points. Former 7'0" NBA vet, John Edwards (Kent State) also added 8 points for PGE.
  

• On Twitter (above), Jon Jaques ('10) reacts to Schoellkopf Field's new scoreboard, advocating a new video display board for Newman Arena. We join in his sentiments. While Cornell has several national power athletic programs, including but not limited to the men's lacrosse (2007, 2009, 2010 NCAA Division I Final Fours), women's hockey (2010 and 2011 Division I Final Fours), men's hockey (2003 Division I Frozen Four), and wrestling (2011 Division I National Runner Up), Cornell's men's basketball team arguably brought more national publicity and attention to the University than any of those teams when the program captured its third consecutive Ivy League title and finished the 2010 season nationally ranked and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen.

News and Notes: Friday Edition

Until another Ivy League team finishes a college basketball season ranked in the top 25 and advances as deep as the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament, Cornell's 2009-2010 team continues to remain the celebrated gold standard of Ivy League basketball in the modern era. Above, the starting five from the toast of America during 2010's March Madness. Below, some news and notes for Friday...

• After Zastal of Poland's premier league, the PLK, announced the signing of 6'9" Phoenix Suns forward, Gani Lawal, Lawal's agent Andy Miller told the Tuscon Citizen, "They were looking for a forward to go next to (former Cornell center) Jeff Foote." Cornell's Foote (class of 2010) is in his first season with Zastal along with Ryan Wittman (Cornell '10).
  

• In stressing a need of more school spirit at Columbia, Jeremiah Sharf of the Columbia Spectator refers to the "Beat Cornell" T-Shirts passed out last season at the Big Red's game in Morningside Heights.

• Take this with a grain of salt, but student writer, Brian Kotloff of the Daily Pennsylvanian picks his Penn Quakers to finish in second place in the Ivy League. He also projects the Quakers' freshman, Greg Louis as a frontrunner for Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Kotloff writes, "Last year [the Rookie of the Year competition] brought us Miles Cartwright vs. Laurent Rivard, won by Rivard on a highly questionable judges’ decision. " Of course, Kotloff is incorrect. The Ivy League Rookie of the Year was won by Sean McGonagill of Brown. And of course, we told you McGonagill was the best guard long before he arrived in the Ivy League when we wrote on November 10, 2009, "By the way, we are hearing from a few sources that Brown recruit, Sean McGonagil is the best incoming guard in the Ivy League next year." In any event, Louis, an excellent recruit, did choose Penn over Tulane, which by the way, for the sake of some perspective, the Green Wave also offered scholarships to two Cornell freshmen, Dave Lamore and Dominick Scelfo.

• We hear that Cornell's Homecoming Weekend will be a huge recruiting weekend for the Big Red basketball program as several high profile recruits will be on campus to take in the football game and weekend festivities.

Men's Basketball Announces Schedule Changes

* Revised 2011-12 Men's Basketball Schedule

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Three games on the 2011-12 schedule have been reshuffled, all involving Ivy League games in January. The changes are due to keeping final exam schedules at Princeton.

Men's basketball's scheduled single home game against Columbia has been moved to Saturday, Jan. 28 at Newman Arena from its original date of Jan. 14. That weekend will switch with home contests against Princeton and Penn, which will now be played on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14, respectively. Those games were originally scheduled for Jan. 27 and 28.

Game times will be announced shortly.

News and Notes: Thursday Edition

• A reminder that Cornell's Red-White Game, the annual intersquad scrimmage, is scheduled for October 22 during Alumni Weekend. Above, Ugo Ihekweazu ('07) throws down a dunk during the 2006-2007 edition of the game.
  

• In exhibition game action on Wednesday, Ryan Wittman ('10) scored 8 points while Jeff Foote ('10) added 7 points in a losing effort as their club, Zastal, fell 73-68 to league rival, PBG Basket of Poland's PLK league. Above, Wittman and Foote have some light moments following a scrimmage against Stargard on August 3. • Get ready to see the Big Red on television against a pair of Big 10 opponents in 2011-2012. In announcing its schedule, Penn State Athletics notes on its official website, "the Lions' game vs. Cornell (Wed., Dec. 21 @ 7:30 p.m.) will appear either on [the Big Ten Network] BTN or BTN.com." Additionally, University of Illinois Athletics indicates on its official website that the Cornell at Illinois game on December 19 will also be televised. Meanwhile, Cornell's January 3 game at Maryland, per Maryland Athletics, will likely be televised on either Comcast Sports or on one of the networks in the ESPN family such as ESPN2 or ESPNU. Last season every single Maryland game was televised.
  

• The Olean Times Herald notes with respect to St. Bonaventure's 2011-2012 schedule, "As it stands, Bona has just four true home games on its non-conference slate: its season-opener against Cornell (Nov. 11), which visits the RC for the first time since 2004."

• In addition to St. Bonaventure, Cornell will also serve as the home opener for Delaware according to DelawareOnline.com.
