A Date in Cornell Basketball History: Cornell at Illinois
A December 19, 2011 trip to Illinois as a tribute return home game for Cornell senior, Chris Wroblewski (Highland Park, IL) is among the highlights for Cornell's 2011-2012 schedule. The two teams do have some history, facing each other in 1932, 1939, 1948 and 1961. The last game was certainly the most memorable for Cornell. During the 1961-1962 season, the Big Red raced out to a 14-2 start, which included a 72-60 win at Illinois on December 23, 1961. The win made headlines in the national wire services. Cornell finished the season 18-7 under head coach Sam MacNeil. The Cornell Daily Sun (below) published the news of Cornell's big Illinois win in the first issue following the winter break for students.

The University of Illinois has announced its 2011-2012 schedule which includes a December 19 homecoming game for Chris Wroblewski (Highland Park, IL) and the Cornell Big Red.While we are still unable to release Cornell's full nonconference schedule, below is a listing of the games already publicly announced or which are commonly known "return" games from a year ago.

Gabe Norwood shared the court with Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant and other NBAers this weekend
George Mason alum Gabe Norwood has been playing professionally in the Phillipines for quite some time now. This weekend he and other All-Stars from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) league squared off against some of the NBA's best. Some of the players he shared the court with were Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul. Quote from interaksyon.com:
“It was fun, absolutely a total experience. It’s unbelievable,” said Norwood, who rocked his new Kid ‘N Play haircut for the game.

Below, some news and notes for Monday...- The Republican American notes that a Duquesne forward will join Louis Dale's German Club, Goettingen this season.
- Jeff Aubry ('99) is appearing in the Finals of the Puerto Rico basketball league (the PBN) with his club, Arecibo which leads Quebradillas 1-0 after the first game. See additional alumni updates further below in this post.
- If you have not had the opportunity to check it out yet, take a look at the exclusive Inside Tour of Cornell Basketball. The tour video was produced by the staff of Slope Media with background music performed by Cornell alumnus, Alex Kresovich. The background song, "The Return" will also be the main theme song for the upcoming 2012 version of the video game, NBA2K. - Throughout the year we provide periodic updates on Cornell's alumni playing professionally. Below, some updates:
-John McCord ('97) (SIG Strasbourg, Pro A France)-2010-2011 season concluded. The 6'6" forward and long time veteran of the European leagues averaged 11.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Strasbourg finished 12-18 and in 12th place in the 16 team league. During his roughly fifteen year pro career, McCord, a former 1st Team All Ivy League selection, has played in France's pro leagues, Venezuela and in the United Kingdom.
-Jeff Aubry ('99) (Halcones Rojos, LNBP Mexico/Arecibo Capitanes, Puerto Rico Basketball League)-Aubry and his Arecibo club in the Puerto Rican league swept Coamo 4-0 in the first round and knocked off Guaynabo 4-1 in the semifinals of the BSN playoffs. Arecibo leads Quebradillas 1-0 in the BSN Finals. Through July 25, the 6'11" Aubry is averaging 4.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game for Arecibo (19-11, 2nd place out of 10 teams). Aubry splits his time in both the Mexican and Puerto Rican professional leagues. He played several seasons in the NBA D League in the early part of his career with the Fayetteville Patriots and Florida Flame and earned honorable mention all D-League in 2002. During his more than a decade of pro experience, Aubry has also played professionally in the ABA and abroad in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Poland, Argentina, Uruguay and Peru.
-Cody Toppert ('05) (Forli, LegaDue Italy)-2010-2011 season concluded. Toppert, a 6'4" shooting guard was averaging 9.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for Forli of Italy's second division, Lega Due, before the franchise terminated his contract during March. Toppert previously also played this season with the Plymouth Raiders of the British Basketball League where he was averaging 14.2 points per game before moving to Italy. Like Aubry, Toppert is a veteran of the NBA D League, a former Albuquerque Thunderbird. He will play the 2011-2012 season with Ourense of Spain's second division. During his pro career, Toppert has also played in the CBA as well as in Portugal, Germany and New Zealand.
-Jason Hartford ('08) (Ginasio, LPD Portugal)-2010-2011 season concluded. The 6'9" Hartford concluded his season averaging 14.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Ginasio finished the year 10-12 and in 6th place in the 12 team league and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. During his career, Hartford has played professionally in Finland and Africa (Mozambique).
-Louis Dale ('10) (Gottingen, Bundesliga Germany)-2010-2011 season concluded. Dale completed the regular season averaging 8.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Goettingen ended up 17-15 on the season and in 7th place out of 18 teams in the Bundesliga. He will return to Gottingen for the 2011-2012 season.
-Ryan Wittman ('10) (Ft. Wayne Mad Ants, NBA D-League)-2010-2011 season concluded. With the season finished, Wittman averaged 7.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game for the Mad Ants of the NBA D-League. Ft. Wayne finished 24-26 on the season and in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. Before moving to the D-League during January, Wittman averaged 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game for Forli in Italy's LegaDue this season.
-Jeff Foote ('10) (Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel Winner's League/Melilla, Spanish 2nd Division)- 2010-2011 season concluded. Foote averaged 7.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the floor. Melilla did not qualify for the playoffs finishing with a 14-20 record and 11th place finish in the 18 team league. Foote is on loan to Melilla from Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv.
-Jon Jaques ('10) (Ashkelon, Israel Winner's League)-2010-2011 season concluded. Jaques finished his season averaging 3.3 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Ashkelon was 6-21 and ended in 10th place in the 10 team Israeli league.
-Adam Wire ('11) (Vaerlose, Denmark BBK)-The 2011-2012 season will be his rookie year.

This year's Kenner League (aka Nike Pro City) action has been good with a lot of famous alum from area universities joining in. George Mason '08 alum Folarin Campbell made an appearance this weekend and played for Town Tavern along side Anali Okoloji. Campbell finished Saturday with 22 points and Okoloji scored 17, 11 of which came from the free-throw line as he was "aggressively attacking the hole". Really what we want to hear about Okoloji but it's unfortunate we won't get to see him this upcoming season. Overall Okoloji has looked good and he has a lot of potential to grow this season as he watches from the sidelines and takes everything in.
Among the others who have looked good at this year's Kenner league is freshman Corey Edwards. The phrase "true point guard" will be thrown around a lot when talking about Edwards and he has looked more polished than the other freshman so far. He has been showing good handles and vision while the flow of the summer league play seems to fit his style of game well. His pass first mentality might help him earn more minutes this season under Paul Hewitt.
The other freshman Vaughn Gray and Erik Copes have both made progress this summer and are looking better each weekend. Gray has shown off his athleticism and this past weekend found his scoring touch, see the unofficial box here. Copes has made some big strides in a short period of time. At the beginning of this summer league he looked lost and slow at times but has since found his rhythm and has shown off his excellent rebounding attributes. He loves to contest every shot in the paint and seems to be very good at staying in position. At times he already looks like he could end up being the best "box-out" guy on the Mason roster next season. We already knew he wasn't much of a scorer and he really needs to work on his post moves because right now he really doesn't have any. Copes will continue to get some conditioning this summer and probably shed some pounds but the potential for him to be a force in the middle for Mason next season is there.
