January 5th - vs. Cornell -- Another non-conference game, another matchup against a "low conference" heavyweight. Oh, and another team that loves to hoist up the treys. Think Bill is sending enough of a point? Geez. Get used to seeing long shots this non-conference season. And with the fickleness of hot streaks from out there, I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see one of the three-happy teams get smoking hot and, at the very least, give us a huge, massive run. The Big Red are just as apt at doing this as any of the others, if not more; they did shoot over 40% from three last season.

Schedule Update: Cornell at Kansas, January 5, 2010
No surprise to The Cornell Basketball Blog's regular readers (we reported the news last February), but the Kansas Jayhawks officially announced their 2009-2010 schedule to include a game against Cornell. Kansas Athletics notes:Kansas will take on Cornell in the third meeting between the two schools Jan. 5 in Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks won the previous two matchups, last defeating the Big Red 100-46 during the 1995-96 season. Cornell won the 2008-09 Ivy League Championship to make it to the NCAA Tournament, where Missouri defeated the Big Red in the first round 78-59.

Recruiting News: Another D-I Transfer Joins Cornell
The Ithaca Journal broke the news of Cornell's newest transfer addition, Anthony Gatlin, a wiry 6'8" 180 lb. wing forward from Centenary College (Summit League--a.k.a. Mid Continent Conference). The following is from the Journal's Brian Delaney:Cornell to add transfer from Centenary
Six-foot-eight combo forward Anthony Gatlin will transfer to Cornell in the fall and join Steve Donahue's men's basketball program, Gatlin confirmed today.Gatlin, who hails from Pearland Texas, played two seasons at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., and has two seasons of playing eligibility remaining. Due to NCAA transfer guidelines, he must sit out the 2009-10 season, although he can practice with the team.
"I'm 6-8, I can shoot pretty good and I guess I can do a little bit of everything," he said. "I won't say I'm perfect at everything, but I can help in different areas. I can help in a lot of ways."
In 2008-09, Gatlin started 16 of 27 games and averaged 4.7 points and 2.6 rebounds over 18.0 minutes per game.
According to TexasHoops.com, Gatlin committed to Centenary during October 2006 after receiving recruitment attention from Holy Cross, Nicholls State, and Stephen F. Austin.
An excellent student, Gatlin was a member of Pearland (Texas) High School's National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and graduated in the Top 5% of his class. He was also a first team All-District performer at Pearland.
When he was signed, Centenary's former head coach Rob Flaska commented, “Anthony has unlimited potential and will end up being an all-conference performer at Centenary. He is long, athletic, and has the ability to score inside or out, even to the three-point line. He is also a 4.0 student."

As a freshman during 2007-2008, Gatlin averaged 19.6 minutes per game, playing in all 31 Centenary games and starting 12. He was fifth on the team in scoring at 4.4 per game while averaging 2.4 rebounds per contest. He scored a then-career-high 13 points in the Gents 70-66 upset win over Texas Tech and pulled down a then career-best eight boards against IUPUI on Jan. 19, 2008.

As a sophomore, under a new coach, Gatlin broke into double figures in four games and earned substantial minutes against major Division I competition, including Mississippi State, Baylor, LSU, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Missouri. An inside-outside forward, he averaged better than 38% beyond the three-point arc in both of his seasons at Centenary.
Schedule Update: Cornell to Participate in Legends Classic, Big Red and Groebe to Face UMass
MassLive.com published news today of what The Cornell Basketball Blog learned earlier this spring (and previously hinted about in prior posts).The Cornell Big Red will face UMass on November 18, 2009 in Amherst, Massachusetts in the Mullins Center as part of the opening round game of the Gazelle Group's Legends Classic.
Cornell is projected to play four exempt games in the tournament. In addition to UMass, Cornell will also face Toledo in Amherst, then will play two additional opponents in the other rounds.
UMass and the the three other regional hosts are all guaranteed to appear in the "semifinals" in Newark, Nersey at the Prudential Center, regardless of the results in the regional rounds. The "non-host" schools will then move onto to the "consolation" rounds and play two additional games each.
In addition to UMass, the other regional hosts are Rutgers, Florida and Michigan State. Published reports indicate that Rutgers will host Vermont and Drexel, a pair of potential Cornell opponents in the consolation rounds.
In a twist of irony, Cornell's Max Groebe (pictured above) will have an opportunity to face his old team. Groebe transferred to Cornell during 2008 from UMass.
Cornell will face three Atlantic 10 opponents next season. In addition to UMass, Cornell will face St. Joseph's and La Salle during 2009-2010.

News and Notes: Around the Ivy League
In news and notes around the Ivy League, John Feinstein of the Washington Post and SayCampusLife.com both reacted this week to an article previously appearing in The Wall Street Journal about the competitiveness of Ivy League athletics.
In other news, Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com suggests that Dartmouth head coach, Terry Dunn may have his job in jeopardy. Perhaps Goodman is forgetting about Penn's Glen Miller who may be on the hottest seat in the Ivy League.
