Fear the Beard Campaign: 1st Edition

Ryan Pearson will be in the running for the 2011-2012 CAA Player of the Year award when it's all said and done this season. With that in mind I have started the #FeartheBeard24 campaign on here and twitter to track his progress this season and update on him now and then. Here is his current stat line through the first seven games:

What he's been doing well: So far Pearson has been as good as advertised and has led the team in scoring in every game but one. He is currently ranked 23rd nationally in PPG. Often his shots look off balanced but they continue to fall. In his senior year he still seems to be finding new ways to get around defenders and to the basket. He has the ability to carry the team on his back and just flat out gets the team a basket when they need one. Also his production on the glass is team-leading and ranked fifth among his CAA peers.

What he could improve on: His turnover numbers are up this season, mostly because he's been handling the ball more than ever. Mason as a team needs to handle the ball better but it all starts with Pearson because he's getting the most possessions this season hands down. At times Mike Morrison looks like a better passer in the post, and with the amount of attention Pearson often gets he needs to find the open man more. In general I think he has the ability to make the players around him better but we just haven't seen that happen yet. Sure, we can't expect Pearson to do everything but as a team leader he needs to be involved with remedying any team issues.

• Fans can see Jeff Foote (Cornell class of 2010) in action tonight in the NBA D-League via the league's free online video streaming on Futurecast. Foote and the Springfield Armor take on the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at 7 pm. Previewing tonight's game, The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette notes, "The Armor recently acquired 7-foot center Jeff Foote, who played on Cornell’s teams that won the Ivy League championship three straight seasons. Foote gives Springfield an inside presence it needed."
  

• Your News Now (YNN) of Time Warner Cable notes, " With a two week break for final exams looming, the Cornell men's basketball team is hoping to go into that stretch with a win and not a three-game losing streak. The Big Red hosts Lehigh Saturday starting at 7 p.m." Click here to see a video report on the Big Red.

• WBNG CBS News of Binghamton writes, "At Cornell, the men's basketball team is eager to get back on the court after a tough home loss to American on sunday. One bright spot in the loss was the return to form of senior point guard Chris Wroblewski. He scored 21 points, a game after being held to just 1 of 10 shooting. Wroblewski says, 'You know when some shots aren't falling my way, I don't want that to impact the other aspects of my game. My defense in to getting the other players involved, and rebounding. So, I know they're going to start to fall, one of these days, I'm not too worried about it.' His coach Bill Courtney agrees, 'You know, he's been getting great shots. He gets good looks, to keep shooting the ball and eventually to go back to shooting the ball as normal.' There is added motivation for the Big Red. Besides Saturday's game with Lehigh being at home, it is their only game for the next 2 weeks. Coach Courtney added he wouldn't be happy sitting on a loss for 14 days. "

• Spotlighting Randy Wittman, the Indiana Pacers Official Website writes:

"Son Ryan, however, has made quite a name for himself. He led Cornell to its first NCAA appearance in 20 years in 2008, returning in 2009 and then capping his career with upsets of Temple and Wisconsin to reach the Sweet 16 in 2010.

'I was really proud of him,' said the proud papa. 'As a high school kid, he developed slowly. He was a lot like I was growing up in terms of being a late-bloomer so he wasn't really recruited by a lot of high Division I teams. A lot of mid-major teams recruited him. He wanted to go somewhere he could get a great education but he also wanted to play Division I basketball and the situation at Cornell University arose. At that time nobody really thought of what might happen but it gave him an opportunity to play in a Division I program and get an Ivy League education on top of it. I was really proud of the decision'

'And then he just continued to develop. He grow from 6-4 to 6-7 in his four years at the university and I was really proud of how he continued to develop as a player. It gave them an opportunity to have a run. I went through it at the ultimate level in winning a national championship in 1981 and it brought back so many memories watching him go through it. They make the tournament three straight years and then as seniors to do what they did in beating Temple and Wisconsin to get to the Sweet 16 to play the No. 1 seed Kentucky and to have a chance to win the game, it brought back a lot of memories for me. Sitting there absorbing it as a dad and as a fan is a little bit different than as a player.'

While Ryan pursues a professional career in Europe (he has played in Italy and Poland), Randy is set for the next stage of his coaching life in Washington."

• VirginiaPreps.com notes that committed Cornell recruit, Tim Higgins (Paul VI HS) Fairfax, VA, 6-10, C (class of 2013), the youngest player to ever commit to an Ivy League program, is among more than a dozen Division I committed recruits that will be playing next week in the National High School Hoops Festival at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Maryland between December 10-11. Higgins' team, Paul VI, faces West Charlotte (N.C.) on December 10 at 3:45 pm. On December 11, Paul VI faces Episcopal HS (VA) at 2:45 pm. Episcopal boasts player such as Arnaud Adala Moto (Wake Forest commit) and Kethan Savage (George Washington commit). West Charlotte features Kennedy Meeks, the No. 15 national recruit in the class of 2013.

• Previewing Plum High School and committed Cornell recruit, Nolan Cressler (Plum HS) Plum, PA, 6-4, G (class of 2012), the Plum Advance Leader writes, "A big cog in the [Plum basketball] machine this season will be senior Nolan Cressler, a Cornell University recruit. Cressler enters this season 55 points shy of 1,000 for his varsity career. He was one of the top scorers in the WPIAL last year, with just over 27 points per game. 'There definitely is a buzz going around in practices,' Cressler said. 'We can make this a special season. We have to keep working hard in everything we do to prepare.'" • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 2 out of 309 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 175 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 237. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

As senior guard and co-captain Drew Ferry’s last second heave bounced off the rim, the final buzzer sounded in the Red’s matchup with the Lehigh Mountain Hawks last season. The devastating three-point defeat was the second straight last second loss for Cornell, and part of an eventual seven-game losing streak. After another close loss to American last weekend, 65-62, the Red (2-4) will try to prevent a reoccurrence of last season’s disappointments when it takes the court on Saturday against Lehigh (5-2) at Newman Arena.

The Red has made a habit of playing in close games lately, but the team has earned losses in each of its last two games by a total deficit of only 11 points. Cornell could not hold the lead on Nov. 22 at Delaware with 3:39 left in the game, going on a three-minute scoring draught and eventually losing by eight points. In its most recent game against American, the Red fought back from a 10-point second half deficit, but was never able to take the lead.

“I think one of the problems has been getting off to a slow start and digging ourselves a hole early on,” said senior point guard and co-captain Chris Wroblewski. “It takes so much energy to get back to even, but if we land the first punch, that would do us a lot of good.”

“We do a lot of close game situations in practice,” added junior forward Eitan Chemerinski. “We practice being down by two or up by two with however many minutes left in the game, because more experience is the only way we can prepare.”

Despite its struggles in close games, the Red has shown an ability to fight back late on occasion this season, coming away with a nail-biting five-point win against Boston University two weeks ago.

“We had that close win against Boston, which if we had played in last season, we probably would have lost,” Wroblewski said. “That was a great confidence builder for us.”

Snapping a two-game losing streak will not be easy, though, against a talented and experienced Mountain Hawk team. Lehigh was one possession away from making it to the Patriot League championship for the second year in a row last season, but the team fell to the Bucknell Bisons, 66-64. The Mountain Hawks also return four of their five leading scorers, including junior phenom C.J. McCollum, who is the nation’s leading returning scorer from 2010. McCollum put up 20 points and 13 rebounds in the win over the Red last season, including a 3-pointer with 1:03 left in the game that put the Mountain Hawks ahead for good.

“C.J. is a great player and a tremendous talent, he played extremely well against us last year,” Wroblewski said. “It’s going to take all five guys playing help side defense to be able to stop him.”

McCollum averaged 21.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore, garnering first-team All-Patriot honors in the process. He will be supported in the frontcourt by junior Gabe Knutson, who finished second on the team in scoring with 12.2 and 5.7 rebounds per game. In the first seven games of the season, the duo has accounted for over 40 percent of the team’s total points.

In addition to stopping the duo of McCollum and Knutson, the Red will also need to boost its own production on the offensive end. Wroblewski, who led the team in scoring in 2010, is shooting only 26 percent from the field thus far, as opposed to 40 percent last year; however, the senior playmaker has dished out 36 assists, primarily benefiting Ferry, the Red’s leader in points scored. Freshman forward Shonn Miller, who was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the third straight week, has given the Red an important spark off the bench, along with junior forward Josh Figini, who scored 14 points in the loss to American.

Saturday’s game marks the Red’s third home game in a row, and the last game before a two-week break for exams. The Red has been a considerably stronger team at Newman, recording a 2-1 record thus far, with the only loss coming against American last Sunday.

“The fans at Newman have been more than I could imagine in my career here,” Wroblewski said. “They give the guys so much more comfort and confidence.”

“It’s always great to play at home because there is always such great energy,” Chemerinski added. “It’s really important for us to pick up these wins at home.”

According to Wroblewski, the Red just needs to get back to fundamentals in order to put another win on the board against Lehigh.

“On Saturday, we’re just going to play Cornell basketball,” he said.
