  • HotStoveNewYork.com lists the players that the New York Knicks have invited to workout/tryout to date, including Cornell's Jeff Foote.
  • The Knoxville News Sentinel confirms that incoming Cornell recruit, Dwight Tarwater, a 6'6" forward will participate in the Rocky Top Summer League, which typically attracts top collegiate players throughout the region. Tarwater has been described as possessing the athleticism and physicality qualities of Cornell players such as Adam Wire, Geoff Reeves and Errick Peck.

Mr. Wittman Goes to Washington

Below, an interview with Ryan Wittman and some highlights from his workout today with the Washington Wizards.

News and Notes: Wittman Completes Workout with Wizards

Below, some news and notes from Ryan Wittman's workout today with the NBA's Washington Wizards. Last week, Cornell teammate Jeff Foote worked out with the Knicks.
  • The Washington Examiner writes, "Could there be another father and son tandem recognized as a part of the Wizards’ organization? Legendary Hall of Fame center Wes Unseld was a part of the organization for many years and his son, Wes Unseld Jr., is an assistant coach for the Wizards. If Ryan Wittman is drafted or sign with the Wizards as an undrafted free agent, he will join his father, Randy Wittman, who is an assistant coach for the team. Ryan led Cornell University to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 20 years in his sophomore year (2007-08 season), but is most noticed for last season’s run. Ryan Wittman is a pure-shooter as he averaged 17.5 points per contest, leading the way to the tournament again earning the school’s first-ever victory in the big dance over Temple and getting to the Sweet 16 with a win over Wisconsin – another first for the Ivy League school."
...it's hard to see the workouts as much more than some diversionary ploy. Now, that doesn't mean they're totally useless and unentertaining. (Keep in mind that the media only gets to see the end. We miss the rest of it, which definitely has more actual action and may or may not be used to make critical judgments.)... Wittman was a nice story. He was unfazed by playing in front of his dad, too: "He's been running me all my life." I also asked him about the juxtaposition of Cornell's amazing season and NCAA Tournament run compared to the Wizards' horrible campaign, and how he thought it might have affected his pops. "Obviously, they didn’t have the greatest season," said Wittman. "They would’ve liked it to go better. With our success at Cornell, I’m not sure if it allowed him to take his mind off it or whatever, but at least someone in the family had a good season, I suppose."

News and Notes

Below, some post-Memorial Day Weekend/Tuesday news and notes...
  • The Baltimore Sun notes that Ryan Wittman will workout for the Washington Wizzards today at the Verizon Center. Wittman's father, Randy is an assistant with Washington. The Washington Examiner also reported the news.
  • GoldenStateofMind.com writes, "Cornell's Jeff Foote has at least been a blip on the radar and, while I can't picture Foote in the NBA (he's way too slow and indecisive or non-aggressive with his moves), I can picture him at NBA Summer League."
  • Congressional Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi tweeted before speaking at Cornell University's commencement, "Thx @Cornell_Univ for a signed Big Red jersey by Sweet 16 team! I deliver convocation later today http://twitpic.com/1s4vpn." She later said during her commencement speech, "Today, I was so proud to receive a Big Red jersey signed by the basketball team that I immediately tweeted a picture of it to the world."
  • A WVBR blogger makes the case for the importance of Ivy League schools excelling in athletics. The author notes, "One reason the nation became enthralled by Cornell basketball in the days leading up to the Red's clash with Kentucky was because Cornell's players managed to put academics first and still excel on the hardwood...Bars up and down the eastern seaboard were packed with Cornellians cheering for their school last March on the night of the Cornell-Kentucky game. If an Ivy League alum gets excited about his or her school because of sports and donates money to the school, furthering its ability to provide a world-class education, that's not a bad thing."
